Yesterday when I was out scraping I found a old foot powered singer sewing machine. The wood cabinet it is in bad shape. I was thinking of putting it on ebay. My question is should I leave the old wood cabinet on and sell it as is or take the cabinet off and sell the cast iron base and sewing machine? Should I sell them together or seperate? It is heavy so is I do sell on ebay how would I ship it?
Sell it as one unit. Call around and try to find a antique buyer in your city and have them look at it. If they give you an offer of $100 its most likely worth 2x that. They will all ways try to buy it at 40 to 50% less than what they can make so they can make a fast buck.
If you sell it on ebay then you would be shipping it on a pallet. Use uship.com to find a shipper for the item.
Some antique sewing machines are worth a ton....does it work?

You can also list it on ebay as a pick up only item, but it may limit the people who'll bid on it. The reason I say may is because I did sell an old table saw with the stand on there listed as pick up only and the buyer was willing to pay for the shipping.

Spoiler if the cabinet is original to the machine I would leave it. If a collector buys it and wants it restored the more original parts you have the more it will be worth.

You should be able to get at least $75 out of it. But research it, the Singer "red eye" machines are the most desirable, and the quilters still use them. Some can bring a nice price. Do NOT use any solvent based cleaners on the gold decals if it has them. They rub off easily, or they will turn silver.
Make sure it's turning freely, if not you can sometimes soak it down with PB blaster or wd40 underneath and let it set for awhile and a good pull will many times free it up (worked for me).
I my self would not use ANY cleaner on it....just water and even that I would be very careful. I tend to leave antiques the same way I found them...dirty and all (I will brush the dirt off and do that kind of cleaning...but I wont be using any cleaners or anything like that)
Again find a antique dealer that's close to you. Every city has antique dealers.

easy is right, many dealers and collectors don't want their antiques cleaned, they prefer to do it themselves and most like the items to be in as found condition.

Thanks for all the replies. I will leave it intact and there are many antique dealers around my area. I will call and set up some appointments for them to check it out.

I also did some research on singer sewing machines and from what I understand it was manufactured in 1924.

There used to be a page where you could pull up the exact year according to the serial number, did it with mine too, although I can't remember what year it is now.
Cabinet is in rough shape with mine also. Although it doesn't look as bad in the photo.

Thats the one. Mine is in worse shape then that.

Some refinishing shops will by items like this to refinish and sell. Need to find one with some type of showroom. I've seen those machines go for $800+ refinished in my location.
Down here is dallas...one in good shape like that can bring 1k or more.
Alot of people down here like to use them as art for there homes.

That is a very nice one . I have a few electric singers to scrap but i have one in a nice cabinet with knee peddle that I'll keep it's old and works .those old singers last and last sure are heavy
