I might finally have a regular for e-scrap

As many of you know, I drive a bus for a local nursing home (best job ever), except for the part time and low pay. Anyhoo. After some running around today, I met the son of one of our residents that was going to take mom to an appointment and could not make in time. I of course picked up the slack and got her there in time to meet him there saying he would bring her back. Nice guy, but was working and could not get away.

Fast forward to an hour later and he is back with her and we were chatting and he said he was hung up working on the computer system at some place. DING!!!! I say, you guys have any scrap that you need recycled? He said they just hauled a bunch of the stuff to the dump. OK, I know they have no progran to get rid of the stuff.

He asked about monitors and I had to tell him that I can only take so many at a time as I am still trying to find a glass recycler for them. He has some 4 or 5 for me now and will call me with everything else they have so it does not have to go to the dump.

I think this will be good as I will run into him on a regular basis at work. The next time I see him I will discuss dropping off a couple of bins or what ever may be needed to better facilitate their recycling of e-waste.

This also boosts my confidence enough to approach more computer guys. I went the route of addressing car shops and they all had guys that came in to buy their scrap. I guess this is still majorly untapped with many computer shops. Guess I better get into gear.

The company that has a contract with the city will pick up all e-waste for free, but I don't think they fully recycle. I guess I need to contact them and see if they care about the guts being gone from monitors. I would imagine that the contract they have with the city calls for pick up of ALL. So I will check into that and if that is so, then game on!

Just to ride on the title of this thread, here in the last month or so I have signed on two trash hauling companies and just lately our local scrapyard where we sell most of our other scrap to. What I mean by signing on is, I have got them to agree to saving all their computer related scrap(escrap) and every so often I come by and pay for it and take it home. Have gotten 9 computers and 2 dish receivers from one so far plus today I just got a call from a lady that was referred by the scrapyard. From her I got a monitor, keyboard, cable modem and a nice turntable I picked up on the way to dialysis, so it was not out of the way. They don't deal with escrap so that's why the referral. The trash companies are making a little money off of something they would only haul to the landfill and it's saving a little space in their truck as well. Thanks for letting me hijack,,Mike.
