Rain day at work results in great scrappin' day!

Wet and windy in my neck of the woods today so I shut things down early at my landscaping job. Dropped off one of my crew members who lives near me and on my way home about a block from my place someone was throwing out an old solid steel cabinet, a nice score for me. Decided to use my extra free time to load up my truck with the goods I have managed to grab in my very part time scrapping since saturday. Everything ended up just fitting in my little truck (03 Chevy S10). Headed to the yard, about 5 min away from the yard stopped at a red light I took a glance down an alley and saw an oven with overhead range and microwave, I really wished my truck wasn't already full. Made it to the yard, only my third time there and did the best I have so far at $41 so that already made me pretty happy. Peeled out hoping to snatch up the over I spotted and lucky me it was still there. It was a fairly heavy beast but still managed to load it into my truck by myself without to much trouble, turned around and headed right back to the yard. The sucker tipped the scales at 280lbs! And another $27 into my pocket. Sometimes it pays to be strong.

ALSO I still have two fridges that I found monday night, the yard I went to today doesn't accept them, will be going to another one saturday morning that will take them but they pay $50 less per ton on shred so they will only ever be getting my fridges.

Starting to really like this scrap buisness!

You be surprised what you can lift and carry with or without help, when you know you will make money off of it.

When I get cast iron radiators, my clients always tell me that I need help, because of how heavy they are. I tell them to let me worry over that. I lift them straight up and down, strap them to my dolly, and onto my trailer they go. I always love the looks on their faces lol.

    X2

Especially with washers and dryers. I just wheel them up to the back of the SUV and lift them in from the bottom.

My best lifting story is I went to pick up a 32 inch tube on a second floor apartment. THe look at the ladies face went I picked it up by myself and carried it down the steps then threw it in the back of the truck was priceless.

I think a dolly will be my next purchase. I am a fairly strong guy so lifting most things is never a problem for me but I would like to try and get more into appliance pickup/removal, if I am going into someones house I would want a dolly for sure.

Have you asked why they do not accept the fridges?

    Freon.

They will take them whole only if tagged to show they are freon free.

Are you gutting them of the compressors and all? I would think if it was all cut apart they could see it is freon free.

Or is it that regulations require them to have documentation for each unit showing freon was recovered in the proper manor, ( a technicality deal) ?

Yes they will take them if dissassembled without any documentation, just not as a complete unit.

I would like to gut them but I don't have the means to properly remove the freon.

    I see your plight.

It is a shame the few that try to do the right thing lose out while others around you profit from the quick and easy solution's.

Doing the right thing always seems to cost more!

Joe, your post got me thinking about if there was anything of value I could remove from the fridges without messing with the freon. Headed out back with a flashlight and took a quick peek. Turns out one of the fridges had a brass drip plate above the compressor which I was able to rip off pretty easy. Probably only about a 1/2-1lb but I will glady take it.
