    A guy at my door.

I just want to share this..is still has me thinking about what the hell happened.

Ok so this guy calls me and tells me he has a truck bed full of computers and what I am paying. I tell him and he said he is on his way asp (two hours before I close) he gets there with in 30mins and we talk some and I show him the grades and I teach him some things and all of that as he did not know much about e-waste (as anyone else who came out here..you know what I am talking about..I take my time and show you everything)

Anyway getting back to the point. After all of this I flip out my computer scale and set everything up to get him checked out and asked for his DL. He flips out and does not want to give it to me, he told me he dose not want to tell me his name, phone number (I had it on my phone system) or his address.

He was like I just want to sell you this I dont want to give you any of my info just pay me cash and like thats all.

Never had a person act like this before..the computer where old so I don't think they where stolen. Told me he was a scrapper so he has to know how yards go about doing things..he just acted very weird and I still not 100% sure what his deal was but he took off like a bat at hell

Any of the other yard owners ever ran into this? I have had people ask me WHY I need it but once I explain it to them they have no issues..he KNEW why I needed it but would not hand it over.

Happens to me all the time. It is one of the reasons we almost stopped dealing with the general public.

You say it likely wasn't stolen so my only other thought is he didn't want it traced back to him for taxes. Was it a large payout?

It was only worth around $50 or so..not a big buy by any means.

Don't think he was a illegal...but maybe running from cops for one reason or another?

Well Jim I hope this does not repeat its self over an over...it kinda drove me up the wall. I wont do something illegal for anyone and thats what he wanted me to do.

..and he came to your house too. How rude of him.. Maybe I would tell peeps about needing a DL over the phone, if they baulk at it, say 'don't come then'

All we ask for is a signature on our receipts for accounting measure. I have looked at receipts and seen names like George Washington on them. Here in Illinois there is currently no law requiring ID for E-waste.

You were right for not doing business. I, like everyone else can only speculate, but I am sure that something was up. Whether small or big, something was.

I personally don't require IDs, but like I have mentioned multiple times, I will get the people to fill out my authorization form before I come. I use the address they provide, to go and pick up the scrap, and I have their name and number. This way, if they try something on me, I am covered, or if they stole the stuff, and then get heat on them, and need it gone, I am protected sort of.

Reason why I need the ID is for the state. If they come knocking my door and want to know where this or that came from I have to have paper work showing. Reason why Illinois may not have that law in place could be due to the fact that they have less crime. Anyone who has been to Dallas know...if you a dirty diaper outside somone will steel it..

Not that far back I had someone take the safety chains right off my trailer, a week or two back...someone took the lids off my oil totes. Why someone will steel that....I have no clue.

It is a tax thing masked in a theft thing. My opinion anyways.

At least it has taught you that if you talk to someone on the phone that you can let them know up front that you will need to get their DL info, that way you can avoid a flaky situation like that.

I don't steal stuff so I have no problem giving the yard my DL. Something shady is going on if he wont give it to you. Like everyone else said probably IRS issues if it was a big load.

easyrecycle, do you send out 1099s? And if you do, doesn't it have to be for a certain amount of payout or more in total ? Just asking. Otherwise, I'm not sure how this could be about taxes.
