    My new old ride

I now have a 1997 ford cargo , Boy do I feel different as a scraper in this , I carried 3000 pounds & the truck just did it like it was no big deal, it's a 3/4 ton . I figure they keep them under rated . It is a used DHL delivery truck with the 4.2 V-6 . Does any one think DHL has after market work done to beef them up? The 4.2 not bad on gas so far.

    They're likely ordered to specifications.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Yes they usualy will buy a 3/4 ton truck andbeef up suspension to 1 ton specs from what ive seen. And dont just put 10 ply tires on the rear. Put them on all 4 tires.

I use to work at a tire store. do them all at same time or you will be running a risk of a very bad accident. Why do you think DOT requires all tires on a semi or any other comercial truck to all be the same? If not the traction of said tires becomes unstable and serious accident can follow. I know this because I also was the DOT/HAZMAT manager for a medical oxygen company.

Parttime scrapper, I have to disagree. 10 ply on the back for weight and etc. But just because you have 10 ply rear and say a normal ply on the front, doesnt affect traction, etc. Hell most of the weight is on the rear, not the front anyway. No way it will affect traction or cause a accident.

My source is Im a retired 10++++ many moons..lolz...ase certified mech.

Hell, my own rig, is a 200 Dodger Dakota. Sure laugh, come on. XD!! But I have 31 x 10.5 r15 on the rear and 225/75r15 front. Hell I vary the front to whatever I find. I run junk tires cuz I get a flat almost daily at my yard. I have had 205/7015 on the front all the way up to 235/75r15 and never had a issue whatsoever. Even passed state inspection as such.

For that matter, I have a 265/75r15 on the rr and a 31x10.5R15 pn the lr. Reason for this is I couldnt find a matchign 31 at the time and the 31 was free.

As long as he has 10 ply on the rear, he is fine. I wouldnt suggest "car"tires for the front, but suv and lt truck for the front is fine.

I have 5 ply, not sure if i'll go above 3000 lb all the time but I'll keep an eye out for some 10 ply & i do feel 10 ply would be fine for the back as better then not having at all. I keep speeds to 30 to 40 MPH and 60 MPH on open road.
I have had pretty good luck with tires i find at tire yards I try to match at least front or rears . For my other car i found some great tires with a little dry rot but still got 9 months use

In reply to post below I had 3400 today and all is well but i drive slow
I guess if i had a set of 10 ply i could carry that weight with more safety

If you go too light a ply on the front or rear you will get some side wiggle when loaded, and especially on the front some side wiggle can be bad. It's more a case of aiming your truck than steering; if you feel like your aiming, get your tires checked out.

I have some mud tires on the back of my pickup and street tires on the front. I never had a problem.
