Police say residents burning copper wire in backyard could face charges
Nov, 4 2011
FALL RIVER —
A fire outside of a six-family dwelling Friday afternoon resulted in no damage to the building, but the residents who started the blaze may face some legal trouble.
According to District Chief Roger St. Martin, one of the tenants at 299 Mulberry St. was burning copper wires in a metal barrel in the backyard when heavy smoke enveloped the area. It is believed they were attempting to burn the jacket off of the wiring and sell the copper as
scrap metal.
Fire crews responded shortly after 3 p.m. and the blaze was extinguished in a matter of minutes. There was no interior damage as a result of the fire and residents were able to return to their apartments in less than a half hour.
St. Martin said it is illegal to conduct open burning in Fall River. He was not sure if the resident would face charges or be subject to a fine for violating the city’s ordinance code.
