So this guy calls me on one of my free recycle computers adds I put on Craigslist. I get to his house and it turns out he use to own a computer shop. So for free I get a bunch of brand new still in box mice, keyboards, fans, video cards, sounds cards, and the like. As luck would have it he fills my car with 5 towers , 2 UPS, 2 laser printers, and other odds and ends. Sitting on the shelf I notice some CPU's. So I ask him if he wants me to take them too. He says oh no now that im retired im going to pull off all those gold pins and sell them. I said well in that case ill buy them from you by the pound. So he goes into the kitchen and pulls out a scale for me to weigh the stuff and this is what I got for $350 bucks.


2.7oz of black fiber chips = $4.90
14.8oz pentium double gold caps = $90.65
5.8oz cyrix gold caps = $19.94
3.3oz amd 586 gold caps = $11.34
9.1oz amd 486 chips = $71.66
3.9oz k6 aluminum tops = $7.31
2oz foriegn gold tops = $11.62
2.1oz i387 gold tops (assuming that these are paid same rateof 386/486 since they are coprocessor of the 386 boards) = $16.53
32.2oz pentium ceramic = $80.50
9oz intel 386 = $70.87
44.7oz intel 486 = $352.01

Not bad for what started out to be just picking up a few computers and parts from a free CL ad. I havnt even figured in the free stuff I got from him yet but this has to be my best score yet. But now I have $350 bucks less for the auction this weekend. Now i have to get the rest of my stash together and get all my cpus sold to one of the buyers here.

How did you guys come to a number for $/lb? Much negotiating? Obviously he knew what he had was at least of some value, I guess cash in hand can be a powerful motivator for many.

Wish I could KZ. Been home sick all week and havnt had time to do anything. I have to work tomorrow and wont have time to get to scrap yard before then. Oh well there is always overdraft if I need it. Now to total up all my cpu's and ram from the shed and this buy and get a feeler out to the buyers on here to get the best deal.

I keep my pricelist with me at all times in the car. So i showed him what I paid for each type and he was like that looks good to me. Deal done.

It did today to the tune of $400 for a 30 min drive to other side of town

The guy was a 60 year old retired vietnam vet. My fellow vet was cleaning out his garage. While I was there I helped him load his truck for a trip to the dump. Not everyong in this world is out to screw with ya. For the ones that are thats why you can open carry in colorado.

Yep! I still believe this. Even though I have run accross many that will, there are many more that are good natured folk. I will believe this to my grave.

LOL he was going to just cut off the pins till i told him I would buy them whole. And explaned to him there were more gold inside and not just in the pins. So I schooled him a little and made him happy with my offer and made some good bank for myself. Just a normal business transaction of buy low and sell high. Now just waiting to get quotes from all the escrap buyers here for my haul.

He retired. I for one plan to do the same one day. I dont plan to work till the day I die. So I wouldnt say to bad he is done working I cant wait till im done working.

Very,very impressive, I need to learn much more about this. I have 2 clients that have a garage load for the taking. I had no idea that it was so lucrative. Part-time how about a trip to Florence and I will trade you product for an education on e-scrap??

I can do that. How soon you want to get together? Looks like florence is only a 2 hour drive for me.
