Hit a garage sale on the way out scrapping saturday morning. Never got out of the neighborhood. Found this nice brass bed for sale. Had to pay some money for it. Sold it for 99.00 after taking it apart. About 55 lbs of brass. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...d/IMG_4819.jpg

I see beds like that all the time but the magnet always sticks strongly to them and the sellers want brass bed prices for gold painted steel!

I've ran into this at auction too where the auctioneer will say"Looks like we have a brass bed here or I bet it's brass under the paint"...magnet never lies tho.Originally Posted by G_P

its my first one. Usually they are steel. It was the foot and headboard.

My mother in law had picked one up a a garage sale and gave it to me. Lady at the garage sale gave it to her for 10$ thinking it was not real brass. Sure enough it was real. Made good money on it. That was my first one too.....been looking out for them ever since!

How much is brass by you? If you scrap it you will lose money going by prices by me. Are you going to try and sell it or keep it?

Not to sound ignorant, but does anyone know if all brass beds are close to $60 lbs? I mean, if they all bring in roughly $100, that would definitely be something I would be willing to pay for. Like $25 per bed, and make a $75 profit off it.

I don't know if this applies but on some lamps a brought in the yard owner told me I had something called "Cast" it look like brass and was non ferrous but on the inside had a rough almost molten poured look.
What is that, and make sure the bed wasn't made from that because he only gave me $0.20 a pound.

Yep it was all brass It had some shiney coating wore off in some spots. but the scratch test proved it was yellow brass under the tarnished spots. I got 1.80 a lb for it.

How did you take apart the brass? What tools did you use? I'm sitting on 3 brass beds right now and I'm not sure if I have to cut these up prior to hitting the scrapyard or what. Can anyone let me know?
If they are solid brass, check with a magnet, then I would suggest you sell them as brass beds. Check on ebay or used furnishing stores. There sould be a lot more money in them as reused rather than scrap.
To answere your question I would use a sawzall. Angle grinders can get filled up with nonferous metal and as the metal heats up in the angle grinder disc can expand and shatter the disc. I have seen the results of one of these disc shattering and the damage that can happen to the human body. Mike

I think I used an open - end adjustable wrench type tool. They had steel rods running through them.
I had a brass bed like that once. too bad some moron painted the thing white.
I tried selling, but no luck. I broke it down and found a steel frame with sheet brass? covering all of it.
Still turned out to be a nice payday, but its one of those things i wish i never scrapped.
