Second time someone took my picture tubes

I scrap out many TVs. I get the copper coil on the neck of the tube, the big tapped copper wire going around the tube, all wiring and I even cut the metal band off from around the main part of the tube that is used to secure it to the TV frame.
I have opened them up before ( very messy, won't do that again ) and the only thing left is a sheet metal thing and the stainless steel in the tip. Not worth the mess.
Just today someone picked up about 8 picture tubes I had set out to the trash.
Either I am missing something or I have some real dumb a** scrapers around here.

That's funny.
It was funny too when I started noticeing other scrappers' activity first times.
I can tell if they're sloppy or good. Sometimes maybe they're walking or bicycling is all.

Don't forget to get the transformer thing with the red (usually) cable going in.
My yard pays "electric motor" price for those.
Usually there's a little aluminum too although it's a pain to unscrew the philips screws...good to save a bunch for rainy days.

I've also found to beat the ceramic rings with the claw side of a claw-hammer in a gravel parking lot works fastest for removing the copper. (pick up the plastic after, leave the ceramic in the gravel)

DumbD: That 'ceramic', I believe, is actually ferrite (correct me if I'm wrong, someone?). I learned that on these threads - a magnet sticks to it and we put it in our light iron pile.

Yep lady is right. I smash the black ferrite on the ground, then sweep it up. Put it in 55 drum for shred.

They have probably heard that there is lead in the glass. And them tubes are heavy. They are probably hoarding them until they corner the lead market.

Auto batteries is the only thing I would spend the effort to hoard. Can't see tubes being profitable.

Just a thought...I dont know the laws in MI, but in WI you cant throw them out. Ive seen tvs at the curb that got tagged as unacceptable, ive even seen a pile of plastic casings passed up by the garbage and recycle men.

This may not be scrappers at all, but your friendly local gov't picking them up as evidence of they form a case against you. Call it a conspiracy, like I said I dont know your laws, but you may want to be careful just throwing them on the curb...try a dumpster instead.

And before someone jumps on my back, look at it this way. Sure, throwing them in a dumpster will cause them to smash, but so will the garbage men who put them in the truck...

Funny you bring that up....is the sheet metal thingy look anything like this (the top one) I found it in the neck of a tube tv and wonder what metel it is plated with. The one on the bottom is the same but came out of a DVD player. Is it gold plated by any chance?? It is not magnetic. What should I do with them?

I'm just guessing here, but maybe colored aluminum? Is it softer, easy to bend?

yes it is somewhat easy to bend. Never thought of colored alum.

I was told that starting first of the year it is illegal and prosecutable to throw away both computers and CRT devices in the general trash here in New York state. I was told this by an IT guy that is pretty on his game, but I admit I havn't looked it up myself.

I have been searching for a better way to dispose/ recycle TV picture tubs as well as CRT tubs with not much luck. So far the best I have come up with is a company 40 miles away that charges to take them. 80 mile round trip + a fee. Not happenin'.

call your local goodwill see if they take them. Mine does for free.
