Best e-scrap haul thus far

Received a call a couple weeks ago from a guy who saw my ad. Works in IT and had a bunch of stuff that he accumulated over the years that was now just taking up space in his parents house. A couple calls back and forth finally lead to me making the trip to see him yesterday afternoon. When I got there I discovered that apparently this guys dad called another scrapper to come and take the stuff and he was already there having a look. I went upstairs to where they were currently stored, met the other scrapper who was a nice guy and thankfully for me out of his element when it comes to recycling computers, after a couple minutes he said he would call them back tomorrow with his offer.
From our previous conversations he said that he would have it all sorted by the time I got there as he did not want to get rid of everything, of course he didn't get around to it. I was a little annoyed but kept that to myself, I am for the most part a very patient person I just felt as though there was no thought given to the value of my time. I'd say it all worked out fairly well though.

For $100 + $12 gas



12 Towers (only about half are complete, some are missing ram and hard drives)
14 of the Mini Dell computers, never seen these before and not exactly sure what I will get out of them, some are missing hard drives.
6 APC power surge battery back up power bars

Not pictured
A box of mixed hard drives, cd/dvd drives a few pci cards
Laptop
4 cable boxes
0.5lb Ram
7 P4 Metal back CPUs
50lbs lithium ion batteries
Few cell phones
3 motherboards
and a box of other goodies I am far to tired to sort through at the moment.

Hopefully will get a chance to process everything in the next couple of days.

I plan to use the components to make myself a working system to use solely for testing components before resale online (inspired by parttimescrapper lol)

Haha thanks Dee! My current apartment is rather tiny and once you cram it full of computer scrap it looks even smaller! Hoping to check out another apartment literally just down the block from me tonight. It's only $50 more a month but is a two bedroom, one of which I could use for storage and tear downs. I'm really not a fan of my new hobby spilling over into my living space (living room, bedroom etc.) and if I ever manage to get another girlfriend I can't imagine she would like it much either lol.

Do yourself a favor and just look for a townhome type apartment with a garage. I think that would be even better than a 2 bedroom apartment.

That would be ideal, but waaaay out of my price range. I'd be looking at 1500-1800/month for something along those lines here. With my income I'm hurting with the $850 + hydro I am currently paying.

I browsed the apt section of CL for the Toronto area. Wow, some of these asking rents are ridiculous! My mortgage is about 1/2 what you're paying now. Hope you find something that is suitable, and soon.

Wow that is crazy, we are just down the road from you, in Hamilton. We pay $950 heat n hydro included. We have a store front, apartment out back, and a paved fenced compound out back. We have no yard but a hell of a setup. Only big problem I have is, the wife just has to bang on the wall to get my attention when in the shop. Furthermore, my four year old daughter now does the same thing. Seems like I just get into something then one of them will bang on the wall. Next investment: Intercom.
Another thing you can do is rent a garage for $75 a month to work out of. We did that for awhile. Cheap and easy.

This is exactly what I am trying to do, unfortunately $75 for a garage doesn't exist in Toronto either lol. $150-$250 depending on location and size. I haven't found one that makes sense for me as of yet.
Housing costs in this city are nuts and along with traffic are the only reasons I contemplate leaving all together. A good friend bought a house with his girlfriend a few months ago. Small 3 bedroom bungalow, needed basically new everything (furnace, plumbing, electrical etc) $450k.

There has to be a garage somewhere that isn't being used and aren't gonna rake you over the coals in rent.

Know any elderly people? Think it was on this forum I read about it. Find an elderly person, or someone that doesn't use their garage. Rent it for reasonable, and at the same time check up on the person living there.

If you get one that can't hear well, then you can use your loud tools at any time.

WOW I just baught my house in denver subburbs back in february. 1900 square feet 4 bedroom 2 car garage and 2 sheds in back yard. i only paid 180K.

Idaho - I'm sure there is something, just haven't found it yet.

Parttime - For what you described that would run you 350-500k in a Toronto suburb depending on location, condition, size of lot etc. Where I live your 180k would not even buy you a 1 bedroom condo and I'm not downtown or in a swanky neighborhood by any stretch of the imagination.

Sounds like you need to move to the country. Aint no way in hail I would live in a city that it would cost me 500k for a house. Just aint worth it to me.

I have that very thought often. In all honesty I have no idea what the future holds for me. I have active applications with both the military and the Toronto police. I've always wanted to be a cop in Toronto and the hope of making this happen is the main reason why I am still here.

man they must pay the cops well. if you can be a cop and buy a 500k house.

60-80K depending on seniority. Plus $60/hr overtime.
