    moving a job site trailer

I'm thinking about buying a job site trailer at auction if the price is right...Problem is, its huge! Pretty much an industrial strength mobile home - 57' long, 11' wide, empty except for paneling, lighting, carpet and a commercial AC unit. It has a standard 2-5/16 ball hitch.

Anybody moved anything like this? I have a dually so pulling capability isn't an issue, rather I'm worried about oversize rules, etc. Don't even know where I'd store it but if its a good deal, would be nice to hang on to for posterity or resell. Too nice to scrap.

I would call your local highway maintenance division to get regulations and if nothing else have a couple of buddies run a truck in front of you and behind you

sadly, I have no buddies LOL

everything I do requires planning to be done solo. Its tough being a pirate without a crew haha...

But yeah, I should call ODOT and check.

Why not call a mobile home toter and have them move it? Might be cheaper in the long run.

For safety, just hire a mobile home hauler. They do it all the time and has the permits needed and the insurance/lights/signs/mirrors.
If the Dot would stop you, it could cost you your truck. Those toters are built to haul the big trailers. I hauled a 12x48 park model thru downtown Atlanta years ago, and that was the only time my mudflaps on my dually drug the ground.

In NJ to get the permits for such moves it goes through State Police. They are expensive as well.

That trailer would put your dually's a$$ down on the ground, maybe break an axle. plus with a M.H. toter, the permits and everything needed is all included in the price quoted. Up here there is 2 brothers that do used mobile homes and even teardown and setup is included in the price, just a thought.

I had a smaller one, 24 ft x 8 ft x 8 ft. The thing was big but fairly light and only on a single axle with 2 5/16 ball hitch. Great for a remote office or for storage while working a job, but with single axle not good for any added weight. Pulled it with a one ton. Got it for free because contractor that had it didn't have anywhere to keep it and needed it gone.

The weight is less of a concern than the regulations/size. I've pulled some big trailers but this one's out of my range of experience.

If the Dot or any police agency looks at your truck and see's no wide load mirrors/oversize load signs/ and Dot numbers, they will pull you over for the state/hwy patrol to do a complete check out, could possibly write a ticket for each offense, or possibly tow the trailer and impound the truck. I knew of a semi driver (renegade) that got fined close to $5000 for multiple offenses and his truck impounded. Not saying this will happen, anythings possible today with a police agency.

yeah that just looks like a hefty fine waiting to happen if you move it on your own, i have a chevy 3500HD (10 lug truck) and the specs say it could pull something like that, but as stated above if the highway patrol see's you, you better have wide load gear and the tags on your truck better be weighted for that load otherwise they will bury you in tickets, at least i know the will in NC, around here the highway patrol loves ****ing with anybody they think is "overloaded", i have had more than my share of roadside inspections, fortunately i keep my paperwork in order, and my trucks set-up, but its still a pain in the rear.

not sayin you couldn't move it yourself but unless you have the truck for it and the gear to be legal the risk's may not be worth it.

and this is not my truck but its what i mean by a 3500HD its not a regular 1 ton, it has 10 lug wheels, solid axle front suspension and a frame almost as stiff as a 2-ton truck. and if you look the axle is pushed more to the rear of the truck than a regular pick-up trucks axle is.

This is what "professional mobile home drivers" and "mobile home toters" are for. Not "class E" license holders with a "dually".

They should have 1 or 2 axle electric brakes, unless a mouse has eaten thru the wires, then it's anybody's guess. That's why a toter, their big enough to whoa down a load like that.

I think I saw IronPirate last week heading towards an undisclosed scrap yard. I didn't know it was him, but I just had a feeling...

I know lying is wrong, but if the elephant man came in now in a blouse with some make up on, and said, "How do I look?" Would you say, bearing in mind he's depressed and has respiratory problems, would you say, "Go and take that blusher off you mis-shapened elephant tranny?" No. You'd say, "You look nice... John""
