    Yesterdays haul

Here's what I picked up yesterday.

1 stand up freezer, 2 water heaters, 2 dryers, 97 Dodge Intrepid. Also got an old exercise bike and a satellite receiver. Got the Intrepid for $200 and everything else I got for free. Only cost me $10 in gas. Spent a good part of the afternoon getting them, but they were from friends. So a good part of that time was spent talking. Had to pull all the appliances out of a basement, so I got a good workout out of the day too. Planning on parting out the Intrepid before I haul it in for crush.

You are so lucky no yard around me will take fridges or freezers even if they had the compressor removed.

How much do you expect to get from a dryer like that? I have a bunch of washers / dryers / stoves but I'm avoiding taking them in because they will fill my truck and everyone has told me I'll probably only get $20 for 3 items.

I thought you just asked in another post how to break them down for more money.

@ backwell - I'm not sure how much I will get for the dryer, depends on the current price when I haul in. It doesn't weight a whole lot, like 100 -125 lbs. Going by what the price was at one time last year, they paid $145 per ton. That would make the dryer worth approx 7-8 bucks. That pure weight though. I'll go through and pull any copper or aluminum I find on one. Also gotta go coin hunting in it!!!! lol

Another nice thing about the yard I go to. If i put a couple appliances on the trailer at the same time I haul a car in, he will give me car price for the whole load. Car price is usually 20-30 bucks per ton more then appliance price.

@ maxa - That sucks to hear. Around here there is only one yard that pays for them. A couple will take them, but won't pay. And one still charges for ALL appliances. The funny part is the guy that I got the appliances from, his dad runs one of the scrap yards that just takes them. His reasoning for calling me was that I would help get them out of the basement, there for earning them. To haul to his dads, he would have to get them out himself. Either way, he doesn't get money. But with me he gets help.

You can use the appliances to put smaller items into/nuts,bolts, to increase the weight and keeps the small stuff from making a mess everywhere.

Well with shred at $260 a ton here in denver. I love appliances now more than ever. Last week I had 2 fridges,1 tub, 1 hot water heater, office chair, and about 12 computer cases. Weighed in at 850 pounds about and I got $111.00. Not bad for 30 mins driving around the hood on trash day.

nuts and bolts are usualy 1/4" or thicker that makes them "heavy melt" or at least Grade B dealer clips.

a screw is worth more per lb then an appliance

@ mechanic688 - That is a good idea. Although nuts and bolts are mostly considered prepared iron here, which is worth more then appliances or cars. I do have small tin items that can be put inside. How I didn't think of that is beyond me.

@ pts - Man I wish prices were that good here. Currently we are at about half that.

We save our tin cans in our household so all of that and small brackets out of the inside of computers and other small metal goes inside washers/dryers/fridges and freezers.

and here I started thinking I was crazy for keeping all the screws, bolts, and nuts seperated. I've been filling coffee cans with them. Most of mine are tiny from scrapping out t.v.s and computers.

It doesn't cost any more time to save it and it all add's up.

I read somewhere here that the scrapmetal dealers will pay a extra $20 on top of the weight if you have a 55 gallon drum filled with nuts bolts & screws.

Just for the conveinence of it being in the drum. I will ask next time I'm at my scrapper.
