Took in a half a load of sheet iron today. ( the yard is close by that's why it was half a load.) I had 15 shells from microwaves. My yard said they can no longer accept anything from microwaves because of the radiation. They wouldn't even take the motors from the trays. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or is it a new thing?
I did tear it completely apart and they were ONLY shells. Taking it to a different yard tomorrow. I called to make sure they took them.

LOL they dont hold radiation. Sounds like that yard didnt want to deal with you. If they had radiation my load would go off every time I went accross the scales at my yard.

Some yards around here make u take the door off but most will accept them however you bring em

That was my thoughts exactly. I laughed. I have been there 30 or 40 times and never had a problem with microwaves until now. They do have the radiation testing and my load never set it off. He said it is a new policy they just started.
My yard changed their policy on microwaves also, they now charge $5 to accept them. They still accept them from me because I break them down and only drop off the shells. Their main concern is the large capacitor.

I realize this is an older thread, but I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. The yard not taking microwaves? And if so, does anyone know why? My yard recently started not taking them unless their "gutted". But I'm not exactly sure what part it is they want out. Anybody know?

Yea, they probably don't want the magnetron with the Beryllium oxide still on it. The dust from a broken beryllium chunk can be dangerous to breathe. The most common colors are white and pink.Originally Posted by skylinejack

Thanks Mechanic, That's what I thought. Just wanted to be sure. Actually, that's where I get most of my magnets! Just wasn't sure if that was what worrying them. Always good to double check tho

Here is what I do, I separate the transformer looking thing from the finned part then throw the transformer thingie in with the transformers. When I tried to sell them whole my scale guy pulled them out of the transformer bucket and handed them back. I was told to take the beryllium and wrap it in a plastic baggie and carefully put it in with the trash.Thanks Mechanic, That's what I thought. Just wanted to be sure. Hey thanks for sharing that info, I always wanted to know what was in a MICROWAVE Dam that thing can roast my hotdog pretty dam good..
Ok question is, what is the value of it does anyone buy it, how does it get dispose of and Please don't say chcuk it in your scrap pile. YIKO.

I think duece2000 hit the nail on the head. The capacitor inside a nuke will be considered PCB’s unless clearly marked NO-PCB. A scrap yard is not going to go looking for that label on every scrap nuke.
Your best bet would be to take the cover off the microwave and make sure you remove the capacitor, magnetron and all other electronics (touch pad). Then you clearly got nothing but sheet.
Heck my non ferrous yard in West Allis charges $25 to take computers off your hands. LOL
