    Your not gonna believe this.

Tonight being bulk pickup night, we figured lets go out and see what we get.
Had a water heater in back of the truck from earlier and too late to drop off. So I reefed it out of the truck, put it in the backyard.
We hook up our trailer and away we went.
Got a pickup truck full of scrap and our enclosed trailer is full of furniture to refurnish and sell.
    Right on.....
I get home back the trailer into my driveway, get into the house and something make me think about the waterheater. I go for a beer and a looksy. GONE...
from my backyard. Really, come on .. I probably knew the scrapper too.
Man, nothing like kicking us when we're down..
Yesterday was the first day we left our employee behind to look after the shop.
Well he likes to sand furniture with headphones on. So there he is sanding away out front of the store/shop sanding away be boping to the music. He stops sanding goes in the shop to get a smoke and there's a woman inside. She's like looking at my stuff for sale. Doesn't buy anything and leaves.
I was gone for 1 hour on delivery, and I get back to the store. (with said waterheater) My employee goes on to tell me about the 3 different people interested in this or that, Well, he comes are to the story about the woman in the shop by herself. I said were was she? And low and behold, my camcorder is gone.
Man I just wish we could have the pictures back, alot of before and after shot of the work we do.
    What a bummer.....
To top it off.... My clutch fan bearings are squeeling like crazy and fan is loose. New part won't be in for two days, $90 later.

    A day in the life..........

sucky.. sorry to hear that those people are after you too. if this is an actual store I would invest in one of those cheap dvr security packages. It would pay for itself the first idiot you caught stealing.

I would ban headphones at work first off then I would dock his pay if you left him to watch the store.

Be very carful on docking pay as there are labor laws that can be broken very easy. What would be better to do is dock the amount of hours for a time. Best time to do it is in the morning or at losing. Have them go home an hour sooner if time of closing or an hour later if at opening or...both. Tell him this is due to him being "untrustworthy" and you have to keep a 100% eye on him for a time until he can show that you can trust him once again. What this will do over all is cut his pay...he will lose money from him weekly paycheck and this can really hurt someone and make them think before they do something again dirty. Just my two cents...but don't go docking pay with out knowing your state laws about pay docking.

    Update:
Apparrently, these guys were knocking on doors on our street. Who ever wasn't home got raided.
Bastards, stole a electric wheel chair platform for the back of a trailer hitch. Now the lady can't go out with husband anywhere. She really depended on that unit. And to do that to someone for $10 in scrap. Come on....
The Scrap Gods are gonna bless them with no scrap except for what they can steal. They'll get caught...
I just wish it would be me.
I can't really dock his pay. He works cheap enough. I think we both learned a lesson from that one.
    Scott

That's cool Scott, actually you sound like a very understanding boss. Knock on my door and then come in when I fail to answer! Only happen one time!

Hey Easy here in FL it is a right to work state, workers have no rights! Perhaps you are right about docking pay but let someone set home for a day or two with no pay is legal.

I have witnessed people quit because they're hours were cut due to insubordination and then collect unemployment while they looked for full time work. Director of the school was seeing red when he got back from the hearing.

What I've heard of people doing in this kind of situation is putting another item near the spot the first thing was stolen from, then waiting in hiding with their method of choice to subdue the thief

i'd have to say no more radio, of course they'd be welcome to stay home, if they'd rather listen to loud music

Wearing earphones & listening to music is a workplace danger. You pay them to work, not listen to music.

When I owned the janitorial service, I had a girl who wouldn't stop talking on her cell when she was working. Talked to her multiple times. When I fired her I told her I was paying for BOTH hands! You can't dump trash one-handed efficiently.

In the same manner, I might tell the employee I was paying for him to be fully engaged at work, and jamming to headphones wasn't cutting it.

if he's standing there with a live sander in his hand, and fails to see three people walk past him, i don't think i'd wanna be working too close to him either

I know.... You should see it when I go to new customers without Betty.
I can see it in their eyes when I give them a business card, "Diva Pickers"?
I just tell them, "I would have wore a skirt today but I forgot to shave"

We caught them...On camera. Down the street.
We're not calling the cops, gonna deal with them at the scrap yard.
4 people had stuff ripped off on our street.
When I catch them at the yard, we're going to call everyone.
Hopefully, atleast a couple of the people can show up before they're done unloading.
Get em when they get paid at the ATM
Pay up or call the police.
    Simple....

Granted if you own any business, should always have surveillance set up.

However, if you leave, and an employee cannot be in eye sight, then should close up other parts of the business so they can be in the store.

Like you said, you both learned a lesson.

Sorry it happened to you bro. Almost got ripped off this weekend myself. Am in the process of selling a tall wine cooler worth $1,100. The guy wanted the address and was going to call him in the morning. Gave him the address to the park behind my in laws house and told him to call me when he was close. Never heard from him again.

He wanted the address to come and steal it. Gotta be careful.
