    trouble at the scrap yard...

So I've posted before and as you may know I'm a college student living in a dorm/apartment on campus. And well, I'm having a few problems...
    1. I have about 20plus pounds of ferrous metal from random things I've broken down. I have no clue what to do with it because the yard closest to me has a minimum way higher than 20lbs and I go back home in 2 months.
    2. I went to the yard the other day to sell about 15 lbs of copper I've saved up. I called them first to get a pricing and they asked how much I had and I said 15lbs. They quoted me $3.15. I get to the yard and just fyi, I look like a lesbian (short haircut, boys clothes, yadayada), and they give me ****. I bring up my copper and he says price is $2.10 per lb. I said that i was quoted $3.15 on the phone, and he says, yes, well for you it is $2.10. I, of course, took my copper and walked on out. **** that noise. But is there anything I can do about it? And how can I sell my scrap if I'm going to get awful prices because of who I am?
    Thanks all. Good Luck Scrapping.

Is that the only yard within a reasonable distance?

Did you have a different grade of copper than the grade they quoted over the phone?

Nope, I would consider the copper I had to be bare bright, but I asked for bare bright and copper 1 on the phone just in case and both were over $2.10.

$2.10 sounds like "misc copper scrap" pricing. Was it bare wire or copper pieces? You might try finding another scrapper to sell it to, but I doubt the pricing would be much better.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Was this the yard guy who quoted you the price? If so go inside and ask to see the manager, show him what you have and find out his price.

It was out of insulated wire a buddy of mine at the school gave me. I stripped it. It was all clean and each actual wire was over the size of a number 2 pencil lead. Fit all the criteria I've ever read up on for bare bright.

I would think worse case your copper would be #2 and around $3 a pound.

I'm not saying that the reason they low-balled me has to be because I look gay. I'm just trying to wrap my head around how to get a better price. Maybe it was because it was my first time at that yard, who knows, but the man's demeanor showed that he had an obvious issue with me.

I would take the copper home with you and sell it locally to where you live. For 15 pounds it's an option.
I know lying is wrong, but if the elephant man came in now in a blouse with some make up on, and said, "How do I look?" Would you say, bearing in mind he's depressed and has respiratory problems, would you say, "Go and take that blusher off you mis-shapened elephant tranny?" No. You'd say, "You look nice... John""

Don't let it slide, call the manager of yard and explain that your filing a complaint with the BBB for discrimination.

Or try selling the copper/steel on Craigslist to another scrapper, just be careful tho, If something sounds shady, walk away. You might have to take a little hit on the price of the copper but if you get a good price then just throw the steel in the bargain.

    Yep.
Perhaps since it's only 15 lb.s take it home with you (like others said).

If you have even just a "smart phone" you can search for other scrapyards around.
(I recently scrapped my old truck, on Friday night, would not make it in time where I was going, so my buddy checked in his phone, and actually the place was paying 12 cents/lb. for steel,!!! and I never knew it was there).

    Thanks.
I Be Dum D by the way, who you am???!
