My old man is killing me!

So last week my dad and I had a talk about NOT stripping every tiny piece out of Laser printers. I explained that we get the same price for steel on the computer cases as we do with Laser printers with the plastic still attached, and we PAY to have plastic hauled.

So he starts arguing with me about ALL THE BOARDS INSIDE......And again I try to explain that we get paid the same for the Brown low grade boards as we do for the steel we take to the yard. so we LOSE money everytime he takes the plastic off, and everytime he breaks everything down into tiny pieces.

I tried to explain it to him as paid by the hour vs paid by the job...but he's just too stubborn....

I just let him do what he wanted, and I tore down 10 inkjet printers in the hour that followed. Pop the top off, and toss it in the plastic box, unscrewed it. Pried the board out, and tossed the rest into the Shred pile. I'm going to get through this last gaylord of printers, this week. Then start knocking out Monitors. I want to cash out this huge load by Easter.

I think I'll see about $200 profit....which when you tally up how much I've spent in advil on my sore back from unloading without a forklift.....it probably about break even!

But here is a safe place to vent about your old man. Mike.

I appreciate him, and that's why I shut my mouth and started tearing stuff down. I'm actually very lucky, because he isn't my dad at all. He's my mom'ss 3rd husband. He raised me and was there for me after my dad died when I was 14.....So I get a 2nd go round. And I don't take that for granted at all.

Be sure and let him know that. As a step-father of two, I can tell you how much it means to hear that you're appreciated, especially after they battled you through their teen years. My adopted son now tells his mother he wants to be just like me (!!) and the stepdaughter shocked me when she kissed my cheek when we were talking across a parking lot. That - after years of hearing how much they hated me.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I do tell him. And I'm the kid that he calls when he needs something. I worked tirelessly for 6 months to get his property in Michigan deeded into his name (It was still in grandma's name and she's been dead 20 years). All the time knowing that it will go to my Step Brother (His namesake) because that's always been the plan. The land on Iron Mountain is a Reynold family Property...But I wanted to make sure that my dad didn't lose out on the opportunity to give it to by Step-Brother, because it's important to him.

He knows how I feel, I make sure of it....But he needs to realize it's not always about what he wants...

I think this will be my last big score for the summer. We're gearing up to move, and I really can't fathom the idea of doing this with him again right now!

I've been breaking down printers for almost 5 yrs. I've done thousands of them and I've never broke one down that did not have at least one mid grade board in it. Most have two and they also have two motors and wires and steel. You need to find a plastic recycler neer you, they might not buy it from you because you'll have small loads, less than 40,000 lbs. but its better than baying to get rid of it. Scaners are the worst, one small board (low grade) one motor and little bit of steel and you have plastic and glass to get rid of.

Your dad actually HELPS you break down your stuff?!? Mine just tells me to get my crap out of his garage all the time. But he does help me take stuff to the scrap yard and I do appreciate it.

My Step Dad married my Mother when I was 15. He is the kindest, gentle and loving person the world has ever presented to me. I am so very grateful for his help and advice. I have learned over the last 30+ years that the odds are that he is right even when I doubt his judgement. I just roll with it now. At 75 he still loves to be right in the middle of things and always has a word of encouragement for everyone. If it takes me extra time to do something his way, I just enjoy the time we are able to spend together.

There may a million better places to live than Iowa, but none of them are home!
