Scrappers all over by me but since I work a midnight shift I am usually out before them in afternoon and then sometimes get home before garbage pick ups and do a quick check around before going home. I like nights with bad weather, people usually wait for a break to put out their trash or it gets done late at night so I am golden when I get home in mornings. Scrapper by me don't come out in the rain.

By me right now is bulky trash pick up, they do this twice a year. Lots of competition! Cars and trucks driving around every 10 min or so. Any metal that's tossed out is picked up within 20 mins! By the time the city comes to pick up it is only brush, wood and large plastic items left.

I stopped and got out to grab a roll of chicken wire, I left my door open as it was around 11:00pm and no traffic. Here comes the dude in the blue truck with a cage on the back flyin down the street . I ran back to the truck to get out of the way and he almost took off my door on the driver side.

Also by paying money they mean that you can pay people for there scrap instead of them tossing it to the curb. $5 for a washer / dryer/ stove. ect ect

do something to make yourself stand out! Forget about competition. If you want to succeed, do your job like you are the only one who can do it and do it right! Exude confidence, act professional, I promise you, people recognize that and remember it. I don't throw any money around and still get good work in..... someday I will pay for ewaste..... but never other scrap.

I don't pay for curbside junk nor do I look for it. Mainly farm clean up is my bread and butter, usually 30-50 tons a place. Do have regular pick ups for hvac and appliances which I do pay for, mainly to keep steady incoome of metal between farm jobs

I work nights in restaurants so I always have my eyes open for curb cash on the way home. About 2 weeks ago I saw a crt monitor on the ground and some other wires sticking out of a curbside can. I couldnt stop there so I parked half a block away and walked over. I found a complete home computer and old super nintendo with a box FULL of wires. I started hauling it back to the car and on the way to get the 3 arm full, I saw a van pull up and stop on the other end of the block. The driver jumps out and starts yelling at me to stop and put HIS stuff back because he SAW it first. I tried to explain to him that he did not own the curb and first come first served. He did not agree with me. He then got loud and vulgar with me, so it quickly became a full blown argument on the sidewalk. He then got in my face and told me he was just gonna kick my skinny a** and take it. I am not a a big guy and never resort to violence to solve a problem, but will not take bs from someone like that ever. I then flipped my knife out and quickly made sure he understood that I would have no problem feeding his own hands to him if he couldnt keep them to his self.It did not take him long to go back to his van. after loading the rest and leaving I noticed him following me. I stopped in the road to see if there was something I could help him with and before I even got to his van a police officer pulled up. Long story short this D.B. called the cops on me, because I pulled a knife on him!! After a quick chat with both of us, the officer questioned me about my weapon. After I handed him my concealed carry permit and my .38 spcl(that van man didnt even know was in my back), the officer realized which one of our storys was true.He returned my pistol and knife and applauded my restraint in not shoving my .38 in the big mouths face when I was threatened by someone who out weighs me by about 100 lbs. As I was driving away I heard the officer telling him he was an idiot and how lucky he was that I didnt reach in my other pocket. I have seen him a couple times since then, but havent had another problem with him. Thank you MCPD.

Its amazing how quickly one little legal weapon can discourage a thug. I think little old ladies should carry, Mike.

There is an old lady on my block. I usually help her get rid of stuff (when you own a p/u truck, everyone is you friend when they need stuff hauled). Anyway, recently she asks me for any old computers, knowing I do electronics. I ask why and she tells me her grandkids are out of work, and scraping by. I explain I also grab computers and electronics for money too. I told her the best thing I can give her grand kids (in their 20's) was a link to this web page, so they can learn what to grab. There is a lot of competition out there for sure, and it is getting more and more so with the poor economy. I am now seeing less parts in PC's too (hard drives removed, RAM, PCI cards). I think times will get worse, before they get better.
