My 2 cents
Most HD covers is a good quality S.Steel. Because inside magnet is extremely strong, after while its magnetize.
My scrap yard buy it as regular SS.

Were any of the drives in working condition?
I just put up an auction on ebay for 3 working 80 GB 3.5" Sata drives. Started the auction at $5 and they ended up selling for $30 + $10 flat shipping. Have a bin of them, maybe 50 or 60 of differing drives that were otherwise going for scrap.
Just perusing the sold listings even working 40 GB IDE drives are selling for $10 a pop, which for how obsolete they are, is very surprising.
got to say most intresting convo indeed
I did a video on this, I'm going to say, its worth breaking them down.

If you've a bunch of kids, buy them Beer and Pizza and You got it made. Bob needs more beer..
back to serious ... So.. again its worth it especially if You've older drives.. You can get premium for them. heavy boards and heavy older platters. I've fourty of these drives and they weight out quite a bit. so SCRAP EM DOWN
