The biggest piece of advice I can give is to go back thru the older posts and read, read. About all the answers are already here, and plenty of advice.

How to scrap an AC unit? Simple....
.....Very Carefully.....

Scraping a a/c unit is verry profibalie the first thing you should do is find out if the unit has been drained of freeon, the person should know that i can go into how and what you must do to draw the freeon at a nother time ok you will need a screw gun most units have 1/4 inch screws or 5/16 remove all screws of unit, pull the cage away from the base, you will need to cut the wires going from the fan motor, you should be left with the coil cut the copper line from the compressor to the coils, now get a half inch drill bit unscrew the 4 bolts and remove the compressor weighs about 60-80-lbs depening on size of unit house hold units are 2 to 5 ton thats the size of the unit, not the weight cut all wires tor and then place the base of the unit with the cage in your tin/sherd good luck
I also found its easier (for me, anyway) to cut the ends off the rads before detatching from the unit. Use a sawzall down both sides, pull rad out, unscrew metal rad ends, pop out little copper "U"s.
well i have found that putting the coil in a vise is better cause i can get a better cut savingmore of the good stuff i also sell the ends with the tin on them banging them out just takes to long
I had a total of 9 window units, I found out that cutting the ends of the coils, where the copper u's are joined are alot easier, plus I made a good chunk of change off it, breaking them down helps out alot
First you unscrew the shroud around the unit. Then i usually cut the lines. Then just cut out all the copper tubing and wires. Pull the rads, pull the fan motor. then clean the rads like others have mentioned.
how does one clean the rads?

If you have access to a sawz-all and a vice, Its great to stick the rad in the center, saw the copper macaronis off, and hammer off the steel ends. Totally worth doing especially if you go through a lot of them.
i'm sorry, i shouldnt be trolling. i got bored at work. i agree that the steel ends come off best with a hammer once the "U's" are removed. my video shows me with dykes, but the hammer works well too
that big black cylinder where i suppose the coolant/freon is stored, is that just shred?
collecting san joses scrap
Compressors do just that. They turn the freon back into a liquid. The freon flashes through the coil as it removes the heat and the freon becomes a gas.The compressor turns this back into a liquid and sends it back through the coil again and the process is repeated, well let's just say a bunch!
