wheels, shred or more?

For most of you this is probably an easy one. I got my first set of wheels and unfortunately they are steel. I'm planning on tossing in shred pile. Is this correct or is there a different grade to take them in as? Thanks for all the help guys.

Shred it. Most scrap yards will take it tire and all. Of couse aluminun ya want take of tire and valve stem but for steel its shred and if it holds air fill it up for more weight lol.

If the tires are off than you can sell the steel wheels as #2 HMS (heavy melt steel) or sometimes more commonly refereed to as 3 foot.

Make sure you remove any lead weights regardless of what you sell the wheels as. Wheel weights should be worth around $.20/pound and usually four wheels will have about a pound of weights on them.

If you brought 4 wheels with tires into my yard and tried selling them as shred you would get a deduction on your check. We only buy wheels with tires if they are bolted to cars or trucks.

You guys are too funny. An inflated tire in a shredder will do nothing more than go poof. I doubt you would even notice it.

A propane tank on the other hand is another story. But you don't need to worry about letting the air out of the tires before shredding a wheel with a tire. If an inflated tire was considered a bomb at a shredder yard they wouldn't allow tires on cars.

Oh one other thing, yards that shred cars do not use an SSI shredder like earlier posted. They use a hammer mill type shredder like this.

Oh, I was thinking something along the lines of a tire blow out or something. Anyway, one of the local yards near me has a shredder, and it looks like an SSI type. I don't think they shred cars though.

Yes that is a logger/baler. Somewhat like this one.

If you have any stators from stripped eletric motors, Throw them in with the wheel. Instead of bringing in a wheel and a bucket of hms steel, use the wheel as the bucket and get no tare weight.

Unfortunately tater they are 5 lug 15's pretty scraped up. Maybe could sell as trailer wheels.

I am still laughing inside at the idea of an inflated tire hurting a shredder keycity has it right. If you guys saw what the guts in a hammer type shredder look like once you would understand our amusement. Now the five gallon bucket of gunpowder a local yard had go through theirs is far less amusing...

Well keycity and others must be familar with the type shrddder my yard uses because its not uncommon here no penalty either. I guess the extra money just isnt cool dude. Good to know i dont need to worry now about the tire bombs or to worry about them messin up my hair cuz ya know i gotta look my best at the scrap yard.

i thought the "fill it up with air for more weight" was rather comical myself, i mean like, how much weight can some air add??
