Do you break down televisions?

Me too, yet I end up with them piling up my shop. A lot of times they are "my in" to doing a pick-up.

Take the tvs. Dispose of them respectful, don't be a smash and grab. Every little amount counts.

I break them down on a regular basis.
I find it only takes a few minutes separating all the parts.
Fortunately I can put the back on after I am done and set them on the curb with the trash.

Ive lowered my processing time on crts down to 5 minutes each with a 90% recovery rate on the copper. Open the unit, cut and pull the wires and degaus cable,pull the yolk and break the flyback off the board. I am leaving the tube attached to the plastic front along with the low grade board, all of that goes into the trash. The back plastic goes into the recycling bin. My landfill has hazardous waste certs and this is permitted.

I absolutely take CRT monitors, but only if I don't have a stack of towers that need processed. I like to use them as filler in between big loads and my son likes to smash the yokes so its not much work for me.

A CRT monitor and a dishwasher were my first "autopsy" harvest, as I call it. The other day I had nothing to do and saw 2 TVs on the CL freebies, I was going out to troll for scrap anyway so I picked them up. I got home and unloaded them
heavy suckers, and checked the CL again lo and behold the same person, at the same spot posted 2 more TVs. I figured what the heck and ran over and got em. Now I have carcasses, some big and heavy and am looking for a place that will take them..along with other heavy plastics.
I'm calling the trash company and a recycle yard to see if they'll be willing to take them,for free.
I break them down as I have nothing but time on my hands and the copper adds up.
I gutted 3 of them in the yard in about 15 minutes as a storm was bearing down last week. I water spray the yokes and boards of dust or bugs put my glasses on and go to town..

Thanks, I'll try the Goodwill first, there is one in a bigger town about 20 miles away that is always in the CL freebs. Might as well
troll the area if I'm gonna be there.
Re the TV break down, I always break down the transformers, but haven't taken apart the 'flyback'. I did smash one tho and noticed copper inside. I'm the kind of guy that if I had a vise and a sawzall, I'd do them too LOL!
I have plenty of time and bored as all get out, and pass the time busting everything down to the smallest parts. Hopefully, in the future, if things pick up I wont have to.
One question tho..I accidentally broke the end of one TV while unplugging the connector from the tube, and heard like something escaping from it, that's not a good thing to be breathing huh? I already got sick from all the chemicals I was exposed to during my auto tech days, don't want to add to my health problems!

the tube is a vacuum tube so no gas comes out when they break, they do contain lead though

The flyback is a big waste of time in my opinion, I've only smashed one and it made a huge mess with only a little bit of rock hard copper. It's probably worth more as a motor than as trash and #2 copper.

No poison gas, that's good. My wife was upset and worried. As the lead goes, isn't that something that has value, like a buckets full of wheel weights an such? Or is the removal process of the lead inside the CRTs costly?

The lead inside a CRT is not "collectable" as such. Watch a UTube video if you want to see how it's done.

I throw mine together with small transformers, fans, and chokes/ coils. They pay the same for all of that.

i done a few TV's then i found out best buy will take em back no questions ask or fee. There is a limit of 2 per person per day and then a weekly limit. So far it's payed off. I try to grab any tv i see now.
