Hard Drives: what do you do?

I was looking up the platters online and saw a real variance in what sells. Do you know of someone specific that buys them or just auction them on ebay?

Anyone got a motherboard for a seagate 500 gb hard drive sata?

I tear them down for the boards, magnets and whatnot. I'm planning to start making wind chimes out of the platters. Sell them at the local craft fair or something.

I dont get many, so I break them down untill i can get enough boards and platters

I break all of my hard drives down to seperate parts, The boards go to my buyer, the platters get made into the world's most expensive wind chimes (hahahaha) , the aluminum goes into either a sheet or cast bucket, the magnets get saved (for what i do not know) , the plastic gets saved until i make a plastics run. Almost forgot the screws, they go into my screws bucket, unless they are aluminum or stainless steel or brass, if so, they go into their prospective buckets.

I have a strange addiction for breaking things down to the fullest. This normally means that I am making less than $2\hr, still, it is fun and I enjoy it.

I usually test the drives and sell the working ones on ebay or craigslist and break down the bad drives. Depending on the day I'll either just pull the board and throw the rest in dirty aluminum, or go all out and tear it down to nothing.

Each hard drive I receive, working or not, gets broken down into its constituent parts. I don't have time to test all the drives, nor do I know anyone who would purchase them. I toss the boards in a bin (hoping to find someone soon that accepts them around here), and store the magnets in another bin. Magnets are handy. I save all parts that are useful to me (screws, et cetera) and place them in their respective bins. The casing goes in another bin. The city I live near does not have plastic recycling, sadly, so it meets the garbage pail. I enjoy tinkering with stuff, so the amount I make per hour does not matter - the check from the recyclers does feel good though.
