i have it apart now my problem is theres one brass piece with long part going through it, can anyone tell me how to get it apart? on the other side i can spin the clip that clamps down but i don't think it unscrewing. any help would be nice thanks.

Many are threaded so try screwing it out with some channel locks or something. Corrosion might make it difficult but usually they come out.

I think I might be thinking of the lower one that is in the gas valve. Upper one might come of if you cut the pin that is holding the spring loaded clip. If you cut a slot in the aluminum cap that's pressed in it should pop off so you can get the spring out.

yup it's corroded and ah man i have to cut that pin that's what i thought thanks. some of the other were hard on the heater i had to wedge pliers in the holes and press against the ground with the channel locks to get some of them loose from the iron pieces.

Sounds like you're working on a TP valve. If so, the two parts aren't connected. The clip that clamps down is the pressure relief. The long rod is a tempature sensor. Cut the valve in half.

yes your right, now i have another problem, i used a old made in usa tool looks like the type that holds red hot rivets to cut that pin and it worked great. ater that now i see a metal plate and seems its keeping me from pulling the line through. also it that a copper line i cut running through that valve or brass?

ok m688 its called a tp valve i looked it up on images just like i was told on here. i snaped the rod piece off just under the clip and now i see a small metal plate inside that the rod is running through.

ok i see now the metal piece is cuped over the spring to hold it in place. im going to try and wedge a screw driver in there see if i can pop it out.

I took some pics of the HWH I did today so I will do a write up.
Get a grinder and some cutoff wheels. Slice the cap and pop it off with a flat screwdriver.
The "rod" is usually copper in my experience, with a steel rod inside. I usually don't bother separating that. If I do, I cut the tip off to get it to release. Seems it's pressed in.

WOW!! Sounds like a lot of work to me. Just throw it in with irony brass and move on to the next project.
