Not to sound stupid but How can you tell if a motherboard is p3 or p4?
By the socket. Most of the P4's I've run into are 939's.775's and 478's. Those are all considered small socket. I think the 370's, S1's, socket 5's and socket 7's are cosidered large socket.

The slot processors I have found are either p3 or p2. It takes a little time looking at them to easily identify the difference. It won't take you long to figure it out The information you have been given should get you started in the right direction. Mike.

Pentium 3 = Slot Processor or 370 pin socket form with no metal/aluminum cap on top
Pentium 4 = 428 or 478 pin socket form which have metal/aluminum caps on the top
Pentium 4 = 775 pinless socket with metal aluminum caps on top, the boards have pins on them for the CPU in the socket

Here's some useful info on the (metal aluminum cap?) The cap is solid COPPER with nickel plating to keep the copper from oxidizing. On 775 P4's ,and some 478's the inside of the cap is gold plated. Just run a box cutter around the cap to free it from the processor. To remove the cap from the gold plated ones you will have to apply heat to the outside of the cap to melt the solder holding it to the core.
