$1 each for used cords is good. I buy new 12 foot cords in boxes of 100 for $90.

Not all are 6 microns or 235 micro inches most are around 50 micro inches which would take 65 square inches to make a gram.

I say save them and have them refines only because the amount of phone jack plugs to make a pound is huge and the amount of gold plating is far more than what is in regular monitor plugs or USB plugs per pound. this is just my thinking on this if I had a five gallon bucket of phone jacks I wold't sell them for $2.00#

I think I will do some measurements tomorrow on this to get a better idea in the amount of gold per phone jack and Ethernet jacks.

    Eric,
I already talked to you about the 80186 CPU's and these cable ends but thought I would ask this here so everyone can see it.
If someone was sending you just the plugs and jacks how many would you like to refine a batch?

I found this old thread interesting as I never realized the contacts on those phone plugs had gold. I just figured they were brass or such.

What got me interested is that I have lots of old modular phone stuff as telephones and their related items has been one of my favorite collectable curios themes. Just thinking on how many pounds of those connectors must be here. I wouldn't scrap anything that was usable & quality.

I still find some of the old modular home wall phone jacks at thrifts and sales and will buy all I find if the values are good. WHY do I seek those out?

SAME reason that I keep a eye pealed for the old formed steel or cast mounts that hold a vintage porcelain or cast iron sink on the wall.

They are needed if you want to mount a vintage wall phone or vintage sink and they are about as rare as hens teeth for original vintage stock.

I have hundreds of the phones and sinks,

so it don't hurt to have a few extra cartridges around to go with your boomsticks...

p.s. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?

With the gold prices falling I may just bring my gold ends to the yard here, could get $.14 a pound for them as copper content that's where they put plug ends. Shipping costs are more than the $.50 a pound for them... but will likely hold on and WAIT for Gold to Rise!

I read this thread again to refresh my memory on these cord ends. I know I have many of the phone cords as well as plenty of other computer and other high quality RCA plugs that are gold plated. I do put the usable in like new shape cords away for use.

I still use landlines as I've never had a use for mobile phones and devices. And I have plenty of electronic items that use the cords with RCA connectors.

I still will find boxes with many pounds of cords and cables at sales for free to a few dollars.

I wired all the bedrooms, kitchen, and living room with phone jacks back 25 years ago. We even had two phone lines coming into the house. It probably seems excessive but it made sense when we had four generations living under one roof. The teenagers were always talking on the phone.

Times sure have changed. I don't really have any need for a cell phone so i never bothered to get one but we're going to be going to fiber VoIP next month. All the traditional copper phone lines in this area are getting near end of life. They aren't rock solid reliable like they used to be. The phone goes out two or three times a year now. They're out for a week or more when they do fail.

I guess i gotta change with the times. It doesn't make sense to pay $ 60.00 / month for unreliable copper when i could get unlimited VoIP that is reliable for $ 15.00 / month.

My landline hasn't had any outages for years and it costs about $30.00 a month including unlimited high speed internet.

But it sounds like it might go up soon and how much is not known.

My 6 month vehicle insurance just went up about 20%.

The economy is catching up fast as prices for most consumer items and services is rising as they try and make a profit or keep from going bankrupt.

It's pretty much the same here in regard to prices going up. Electricity has just about doubled over the last few years. Prices at the grocery store are crazy. A dozen eggs are up over $ 4.00 again. About the only thing that has stayed even are fuel prices.

Ahh well ... there is one upside. You can pay off your debts with inflated dollars in times like this. We should be completely debt free in a few weeks if all goes according to plan.

With the phone thing .... our area has been in the process of converting over to fiber optic for the last few years. I'm thankful that it came in. We had broadband over the copper wires for years. That worked pretty well for our purposes when it started out but it was barely functional toward the end of it. I remember it was a lot like when we were doing the change over from dial up to broadband years ago.

I've just been hesitant to go to VoIP over the fiber network because we have a lot of storms that tear through the place every fall & winter. The utility lines get taken out with downed trees and broken poles. It's easier for them to fix a broken copper line than a fiber optic cable. The funny thing has been that the copper lines have been getting damaged but we haven't had a single service interruption since they installed fiber for our internet. That's not what i would have expected.
