Today I was processing hundreds of TV yokes that I have been putting off. In the process I found a few yokes that had aluminum windings.
Also was cleaning heatsinks afterwards, and found a few brass heatsinks that had chrome plate on them. Hadn't seen a brass heatsink before today.
Just a heads up.

Wow... never saw a yoke with aluminum windings. That sucks.
Also, I see the word "yoke" spelled "yolk" so often, that "yoke" doesn't look right! Kudos for getting it right.

I think most people wouldn't have the chance to see if it aluminum or copper, because for most yokes, smashing them up to bits is easier. I was using the angle grinder to cut the glued on windings off the ferrite.Originally Posted by auminer

Are you sure they are brass and not copper...never saw a brass heatsink. Any pics? What did it come out of?

Honestly I don't know what it came off. I have a dirty heatsink bucket and I clean them when it's full. I will have to dig it out and post a picture. It felt heavy so I hit it with the grinder and found out.
I have seen copper heatsinks as well.

Here is the brass heatsink. The middle hole has that white goop on it like most other heat sinks have. Sorry if quality is bad, it was taken from an iphone.

Its 'tinned' brass, I think. I do see yellow brass heatsinks occasionally, mostly over electric motor driver chips.
Those heatsinks above ^ often have a couple of iron wires pressed into them to solder them to the board.
The motor driver chip brass heatsinks are normally soldered to the board & come from 70's Tv's. They may also protect everything else on the board from the EMF (electromagnetic field/force) the chips may make as they cover the whole chip.
A interesting distraction when scrapping.

Its copper at the yard i sell at, they cut it, looked at it and said number 2 copper since it was plated.

I find thinner ones from time to time, when you bend them the silver color plating just flakes off revealing the brass underneath.

There is tinned copper, but this is clearly tinned brass. You're getting a good deal for getting #2 copper vs brass price, though.

I stopped picking up TVs cause once i break them down i can't get rid of them here in pa can't out TVs in trash. What does everyone do with the TVs once they remove the yolk

Get rid of the tube? Check your local Goodwill, I did some Googling and it looks like Goodwill has the Reconnect program in Pittsburgh which accepts computers, etc. Call and ask them. There is also many threads on here discussing the exact question you just asked. Use the search function, and most any questions you could ever have can be found by using it.

I leave the yolks alone. Although sometimes I scramble them.

Pull the insides and put the back on with screws and deliver them to the local Goodwill (check with them first).
Yolks I usually eat with toast, yummm

You can put them back together, at least a few, and bring monitors to most Staples stores and monitors and t.v.s to most best buy stores. Check the websites for details.
