I just tore apart an old Whirlpool upright freezer. Inside (where the food is stored), there was one section of the back covered with a sheet of Al. I pulled it off, and this was underneath:
It's non magnetic, and white gold colored, so I assume brass. Even the clips and screws in it all are NF. Only took a couple minutes to get out. Definitely something to look for if you're taking one of these freezers in as shred.

cool! actually looks more like aluminum color in parts of the picture. Did you run a file across it, make a deep groove into the metal?

Cut thru the tubes i think its copper not brass simmiler to a ice machine tray most think its brass but most are copper
1956 probably has it right, tinned copper coil. I think it was in the early sixties that the Al/Cu coil was first brought into mainstream production. I"ve done a lot of air handler tear-outs of equipment built prior to the sixties and have found a lot of steam and cooling coils made of all tinned copper. Great money!

Another clue,is it heavy if that was brass it would pretty heavy,i belive its copper!!

Thanks for posting ,nice score.
All the evaporator coils I've found in whirlpool products that look like that were aluminum. The goldish color comes from years of heat cycling.

It was so easy to score the metal and see that it's just aluminum, but I got carried away by the color. Thanks for explaining the cause of the gold coloring FreonJoe.
One question: The outermost tube has a white powder packed in it. Should this still go as clean Al?
I haven't had any problems with the yard I deal with as far as turning it in like that as clean aluminum radiators but you might want to check with your yard first to make sure.
