The piece under the platters is the motor, it should spin. If there's no screws then it is pressed in.
I take the culprit and set the edge on top of another HD, inside down, your looking at the bottom.
Take a center punch and give it a good smack and you'll drive it out. There will be the coils that you'll have to take a small screwdriver and go around and pry it up till it releases. The "coils" is the inside of the motor.

ahh..ha! I knew it would be a solution like that. Will take a shot..literally at it later when I go back in the shop.

Thanks Mech and Bear. Figure it'd be a simple solution.

I save up a pile of stubborn ones, then set up two bricks and get to it. A BFH makes short work of any HDD I have ever met.

So how do you all deal with these? Weird question I know, but what do you expect from me?

I turn them over and use a punch on them. Usually they pop right out.

I thought they were mostly aluminum? Guess I'd have to go dig some out. Actually I was expecting an answer such as dirty aluminum or breakage or something. I do recall peeling some copper strands off of some though

I'll also have some questions eventually about larger disks, such as 5 inch ones(from old bigfoot hard drives) and very old 8 inch ones, as in could they be more valuable than regular 3.5 inch, per pound or otherwise etc. Got any clue on that ?

The smaller one.. I believe is not as valuable as the bigger one... they are more brittle. not sure if its glass.. doing some testing on them.. with acid.. and also.. melting them down.. to see the what I get out of them.. now the older one.. bronze looking one.. or copper looking are worth more then the shiny one..

I've been offered 2 bucks a pound for the platters.. but.. I'm gonna see what I can get out of it.. I see there platinum plated on em.. but to refine em.. might not be worth it.

But I'm always tring to squeeze as much as I can out of my break down.. like if you saw my pics of collection.. I've got things serprated to the hilt..

I sit back light a cigar.. and smile at My collection.. and I say Dang it.. why does gold have to be so low right now.. ughhhh but it will be back.. buy low get bigger return later.
