    Brass....I found Brass!!

Tonight I was tearing down hard drives during the (not so) Super Bowl. When I started sorting things after the game, I had four hard drive covers that were unusually heavy. The magnet didn't stick. I pulled out the grinder and low and behold....it was brass! From those four drives alone, it was over a pound of brass.

Keep a look out for brass hard drive covers when you are breaking down those hard drives!

Thanks for this. Just did the exact same thing last week. Thought there was no way they were brass and was going to run them to the yard and get their opinion. Got about 30 of them.

I don't know the exact model number. However, I found this on a 146.8, a 73.4 and a 36GB SCSI ultra wide HP. At the same time, I've torn down very similar hp SCSIs, but they have been stainless. It just pays to check them. I am in the habit of checking every hard drive cover as some are stainless and some are aluminum. I'm actually taking some to the yard this week to see what series of stainless they are. I almost think that some are 304 but some may be 316...especially on those SCSIs. We'll see.

just a FYI, some nuts that comes off of high voltage NON PCB transformer has brass nuts, and also some servers with the strips of fins are also brass, but some are copper, you've to get them checked out, so if you're breaking down server cpu heatsink, they may look like copper but some are not copper, so, check them break them in half and use a magnifier to see the ends to see if its brass or copper, I've come across a slew of server that has brass for heatsink with copper in the middle ..

    So, happy brass hunting.

I can get some pics of brass. for you these came off of NON PCB trasnformer, and the high voltage amp boxes, the post is pure copper and the nuts are brass, as far as cpu heatsinks, from servers, I've found brass platting, with copper on top and bottom, will get again some pictures posted.. congrats to you mud for finding brass.. a very rare item in computer scraps.
