    Hey there, first-time poster, been scrapping a few years though.

    About HVAC motors: how cheaply can something be made really cold? Seems if you could get the steel shell cold--and britlle--enough to yeild to the subtle persuasion of a BFH, it would speed up copper recovery.

    I've tried a few, but I burn through cutting wheels at a rate to me this uneconomical...much rather swing a sledge or pick-axe.

    Motors, worth the effort?

    The place I have been getting fridge motors from, he gets $110 a ton for everything he's got, no sorting & inc rubbish thats with it.
    Its all just dumped off there by anyone, he doesn't pay for it & it pays a worker of his's wages, in theory.

    So, in practice, I grab the fridge motors & scrap them & sell the copper.
    I then save up the steel casings/compressors & sell them for the top $$ & give him that money.

    I never worked out the $ factor, but I weighed a compressor & it weighs 9Kg.

    So, a 9 Kg compressor contains 1Kg of Copper & 8 Kg's of iron.

    He's getting the $110 a ton, thats, say $1 each.

    I get the 1Kg Copper from it & get, say $7 (actual is over $7.Like $7.10 ~ $7.50)

    That leaves 8Kg iron, at $290 ton = $2.32 Thats his money. I hope my maths is write (sic).

    So he gets 115% more, & I clean up his yard into easily managed & stacked & cubed metal.

    I use the outers from washing machines, put a base inside them & then stack/fill it with the metal after removing most of the plastic & wiring & Ali.
    Mostly its old bikes & washing machines & fridge shelves, microwave cases etc.

    Same with the sheet metal, two outers, flat, tie em together with clothesline wire etc, then stack the roofing iron & sheet metal into them. Tie it all down into a long solid 'pack'.
    Its all gotta be lifted with a 'hook & chain'. Theres no grapple available.

    Same with the heavy metal, all in one bin, top $.

    I'm happy now, I get a good $ for tidying up & scaring away poachers) & he doubles his $ -> $$+
