You can try to clean them up but it seems that most yards will give you the dirty aluminum price. Sometimes it's called aluminum breakage.
The reason is that many aluminum engines have steel cylinder sleeves. Was talking with one of the local scrappers about this about five years ago. He had done a really good job of breaking that riding mower engine down and felt it was all cast ali. Was really PO'd that he only got the lowest aluminum price which was only about eight cents a pound at the time. Swore up and down that he would never go back there again because they ripped him off.
Maybe talk with the guys at your yard and ask how they would grade that riding mower engine before you get too deep into it ?
