    Riding mower engine

    I maybe getting a riding mower engine what would I be looking at aluminum wise in weight?. Is there a special price if I leave the engine whole as is? If I called the scrap yard would I ask for engine block price is that a thing? Or should I separate the aluminum? I've done a lawn mower is that the same thing just bigger?.

    Single or twin, L-head of over head valves.

    For clean aluminum don't forget to remove the valve seat inserts and valve guides.

    You can try to clean them up but it seems that most yards will give you the dirty aluminum price. Sometimes it's called aluminum breakage.

    The reason is that many aluminum engines have steel cylinder sleeves. Was talking with one of the local scrappers about this about five years ago. He had done a really good job of breaking that riding mower engine down and felt it was all cast ali. Was really PO'd that he only got the lowest aluminum price which was only about eight cents a pound at the time. Swore up and down that he would never go back there again because they ripped him off.

    Maybe talk with the guys at your yard and ask how they would grade that riding mower engine before you get too deep into it ?

    Alum Breakage all day... but currently shred is higher than breakage so i would toss it in the shred pile. Dont even try to clean them. Total waste of time.

    They can go in with transmissions by me get a little bit better price than dirty aluminum. But for sure check if shred is more let them have it.
