    Industrial air conditioner need help

Ok guys I have a 2 ton industrial ac unit... First question how much is it worth to scrap it? Second question how much should I pay for it? I checked the archives and found no answer to any of my questions but I know somebody has dealt with one of these...
    Please help

As is? The scrap yard may charge YOU to take it if it's still charged (freon/refrigerant).
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I think it is but I was planning to take out the freon and then break it down into copper and aluminum and steel to sale to the scrap yard

I don't advocate anything illegal (ie: cutting lines and releasing refrigerant into the air) but even if there was nothing in it, I don't pay for AC's. Reason is just that - it would cost them to dispose of it.

Find someone, or get the equipment to discharge the freon. You take it to the scrap yard (especially something that size) and I am sure they will remember you.

Your question leaves to many variables to give an answer. Also a 2 ton unit seems awful small to be "industrial", I installed a 2.5 ton unit in a small home today.

How much copper would depend on the make and model of said unit. For example is it a Trane? For if it is the coil is not copper/ aluminum it would be aluminum tubing in aluminum fins! What kind of compressor is in the unit? A Copeland compressor would be great but some other brands will be wound with aluminum. What kind of coil is in the air handler? A slant coil, or a A coil, or an older W coil, each one would effect the weight! I could go on all night with examples one way or the other!

I agree with Injunjoe. A 2 ton unit does seem awful small. That being said, get the gasses out and break the sucker down. Copper, aluminum, steel. And don't forget to cut open the compressor. It's chock full of copper. As for what it's worth, well that depends on what your yard pays for each of these metals. But it's worth it!

Wow its really strange to me how different parts of the country scrap different things Being in South Florida we specialize in commercial a/c recycling yes we do have epa certification for the recovery of freeon. We offer a service of going to a job site where the swap out is, we meet the crane and on a few jobs a hellicopter has been needed to lift the unit off the roof,And set it down on our trailers bring it back to our wharehouse and dissemble the unit.We also do large chiller units from Hospitals Shoping malls ect the barell on those units carries between 400 lbs of copper to 1,000 lbs of copper depending on the size of the unit.I cant seam to down load the pics any body could explain that to me would be great,We pay for these units as well as the house hold units you are talking about We pay the contractor on a unit ton basis generally 1000-12.00 a unit ton each unit has a tag on it with a bunch of numbers the first number is the higest on a house hold unit exzample the number is 48 you divide that number by 12 example 48 means a four ton unit 36=a three ton unit hope it helps some one i know this is a old post but i hope it helps some one down the road

Consult it with the ac dealer who can do business of scrap , they will tell you the exact amount of the air conditioner scrap.Few months ago my ac was also not working well and i called ac repair specialist to assist it. It was totally damaged as checked by the specialist. Then i sold it to as the scrap, and they haven't paid much for the ac scrap.
