I keep seeing folks saying that Best Buy charges $10 a TV...but according to the Best Buy recycle website, they charge no fees. Unless you have console TVs, or large appliances that they pick up.

Allow me to quote...

In my state (NC) I can drop three off a day per household. Your state may differ.

OK, I have been scrapping both tvs and computer monitors for awile now. I average $5.00 total. Copper cone, wire around the tube, boards with copper wire and aluminum and the cord. At this time, I have 75 in total to scrap!

Remove all the aluminum and let it accumulate!

Their are so many different ways to make this profitable for someone. I dont depopulate the board. I cut the wire and that's it. I get an AWESOME price on my boards because of that. I could spend 1 week breaking down completely a gaylord of lowgrade (stacked neatly). Or, i could cut the wire, stack the boards in the gaylord, and sell. I wont say my exact price, but it's above 49 cents, and below 51. ;-)

It's all about quantity. If i can give them a minimum 10 gaylords of non depopulated LG, they're willing to have some guys work minimum wage to break down the boards, and pay me a great price per pound.

What do you do with the transformer (power) unit? I broke one open before, has copper in it but its a pain. Do scrap yards take them as is? I have a 10 gallon bucked filled with those things...lol

Nah a couple of whacks with a hammer... I have like 50+ of them saved up... I don't save the boards from tv/monitors. Just strip them down. I do have another question. OT- On many a board, there are the chips (usually the ones with heat sinks) Smashing them with hammer, it looks like they are made of copper/aluminum or some other non ferrous metal. I was wondering are they worth saving on their own?

I think what you are talking about is the transistors. To the best of my limited knowledge they are coated copper(Nickel or Al coated). Some yards will buy them as small copper bearing motors ,some will pay #2 copper,some will let you throw them in with mother boards, some will buy them as IC chips. The best I can get for them is coated#2 copper.

I read an old thread here somewhere where they were talking about how toxic it is to breath the "dust" from breaking the plastic off of them, so I wont be doing that ever again.Hope this helps.
