scrapping a fridge

i looked around on here a bit and couldn't find what i was looking for. So, i'm guessing that all yards charge for units that contain freon. i heard that if you "evacute" the freon there would be no charge. so two questions:

is this something i can do?
how do you do this?

I believe it's hard to do properly, I'm sure someone on here can explain how. But cut the wires off. Your copper coils will contain the freon so watch out what your cutting.

my yard doesnt charge for anything containing freon and no you need an hvac license to take the freon out if you wanna know everything about refridgerants talk to freonjoe and read all his posts hes hvac licensed i believe

is evacuating the whole system the only way to avoid the charge or can i remove all the coils and the compressor and sell those separately?

Most yards require you to have a letter on file certifying that all units you bring in are evacuated per EPA section 608 before they will pay you for it. Some yards will let you drop them off for free if you don't have a letter on file. The evap coil is usually aluminum and some yards will buy the compressors as either electric motors or sealed motors as long as you drill them and drain the oil.

The last yard I used in Dayton takes the whole thing, minus compressor, as "unclean sheet" at $12 per hundred. They don't pay for compressors as motors but everyone just throws them in the pile next to the fridge.

Pretty weird but that's the way they do it there.

unfortunately the first thing you see when you pull into the yard is a sign that says "$30 charge for any items containing freon."

There's a niche market there ruben, think about it!

Can you cut the casing in half, take the copper wire out & seperate the steel items so its castings & laminations & steel casings & Ali metal.

Get set up to do it for yourself and others. On-line test and less than a grand in equipment and you're in business. Find someone who you can watch for a week to get hands on experience and start charging other people to evacuate their stuff. Make some contacts offering to dispose of refrigerators and stuff. It's a profitable niche market.

oooh gotcha! i work in a grocery store and the refrigeration company is always in there and there good guys. i'll talk to them to see what i have to do. i'm guessing your all certified freonjoe?

I am for everything including reclaiming refrigerants.
