    Copper spools in TV

    Hey guys, I picked up a small TV w/VCR the other day and when I took the back cover off there was a heavy object connected to it with 2 wires coming out. I put it off to the side to check out after I took the rest of the TV apart. when I got around to breaking it apart I found 2 spools of wire attached to it and all I had to do was pull the nice clean copper out. I forgot to take a picture but just wondering if anybody knows what this is. I have done a lot of reading on the forum and I searched for it and couldn't find anything. Thanks!

    No it was nothing like that, it was a big plastic/rubber loop with a free spinning spool of wire on each side and I just pulled the copper right off. the spools were about 1 1/2" by 3"

    I always thought that was some kind of an inductor. Not that it matters to me though since I just tear everything apart and sort them out.

    Choke and inductor are the same things.
    This is from an electronic site;
    An inductor can be called a "coil." There is no particular difference between a "coil" and an "inductor" and it mainly depends on where and how it is used. A coil generally refers to turns of wire on a former with an air core. When the core is metal (such as ferrite or soft iron or simply "iron"), it becomes an INDUCTOR.
    In certain applications an inductor is called a CHOKE.
    The term choke is used when the inductor is designed to prevent a signal passing through the winding or when the coil is designed to reduce a particular waveform - such as ripple.
    This is the best board I could find this time of nite.

    last night I went-a-googling, It is a line out transformer. I found one this week in a philips tv with internal surround-sound system. My guesstimate is that since it is two separate systems in one product, it only needs one power cable, but easch separate system operates with different voltage. eg, a tv needs more volts than a vcr to operate. same thing with my tv/surround sound. I may be way off but thats what I found. Try wikipedia and search "Line out transformer".

    as for a description; a heavy iron "squared" ring with two separate spools. the metal ring is rubber coated. heavy equals about 2 maybe 3 pounds, maybe more.

    That sounds about right! Couldn't find an exact picture but I think that's probably what it was.
