Because it depletes the ozone layer. You know - that stuff that protects you from the sun's rays: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone_depletion

Actually the whole thing is a scam. Follow the money trail. The patent on Freon ran out for DuPont so they developed a new refrigerant after getting the old one declared hazardous. Look at the periodic table. Freon is a naturally occurring element.

The long and short is there are regs against releasing it. You will be considered a bad guy if you do. If you are going to start scraping freon bearing machines get equipped and licensed. There are many threads on this on the forum. The costs are reasonable and you can resell the freon. It takes a little know how much of which is here or free on the net. Mike.

Freon is what number on the periodic table?? Companies can patent elements?? Doesn't seem accurate.

That's cause it's not. Not even close.

Here it is, if somebody wants to point it out...

Whoops, my bad. Fr on the periodic table is Francium, not Freon!

Doesn't negate the part about following the money though...

freon is only dangerous to the ozone.......not us directly

However the refrigerant used in ac's is altered and IS harmful to us. It's not straight freon which is a cfc.... in ac's its hcfc.

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

I cant stop laughing mechanic. I might have a slight edge on him. I cant count the times when I heard that people said How did he get her about my wife. I asked my wife how does she let this monster on top of her.

Most guys also have a recovery machine and some decent scales to reclaim freon.

I question how a relatively heavy gas molecule like freon can float to the upper atmosphere to destroy a light molecule like ozone.

Good question Reelman. When leak checking I always start at the bottom of a joint first, because freon sinks like a rock when in air.

    Found this explanation, sounds reasonable.

I agree, it was a good question.

I was going to suggest that stuff like volcanic ash gets up a good ways, and takes months or years to fall back down, so once you got into the range of one size molecule vs another size molecule, it would only make sense for it to mix more readily and take longer to fall back out. The scientific explanation is better yet...

Skippy, venting refrigerant is bad because it is ILLEGAL to do it. Like driving on the sidewalk. It might sound harmless at the time but it is still illegal.
