    electric motors

Hey everyone, first time poster and part time scrapper. Well I got about six motors that weigh about 25 lbs each. I took one apart and came up with a figure just slightly above what I'd get if I just sold it whole, which is .20 cents a pound. Is this pretty common? I think ill just take them in whole and save some trouble. I also have a hard time with some copper plates that I take in from the foil stamping industry. The yard will only give me copper 2 even though I tell them its solid copper and there is nothing else on it.......hell, I think I should get bright price. What make something not bright? These dies are shiny. Thanks in advance.

Insulation being burnt off instead of stripping it makes the wire just bare but not bright

So is bright only for wire? These plates are solid shiny uncoated copper. I hate to argue with people at the yard but I feel I'm getting had. I usually take in at least 50 lbs of it when I go.

You might show management at the yard a piece of it and ask them, we're just guessing. Nice looking piece tho.

I'd put that on Ebay. You'd get a much better price for it than by scrapping it. Try listing it in bullion first , but some art category would be appropriate. Shoot. I'd buy them from you for scrap price right now.

I think I'm gong to try a different yard. I talked to two people at the first and they both said copper 2 and I debated with them quite a bit. As I was walking out I heard one of them say "you lost" in a mocking tone. Screw them. I only use this yard because they are right around the corner. About a year ago I took a load of 150 lbs. of this same stuff to that yard and they gave me copper 2 and I had the manager come over and he gave me bright price on the spot. But I'm tired of constantly debating them when they get new people.

Is there any reason why ebay buyers would pay more? Are they collectors or are they scrappers from other parts where prices are a bit higher?

Screw them...they are screwing you. Those dies would be shipped to the mills as #1 all day every day. As far as the snide comment as you were leaving...I would have been perturbed as hell. No yard should ever treat you like that. I make a point to be kind and fair to my customers every day. There are too many choices out there where you don't have to deal with A-holes.

i would have had a talk with the management about the comment. and if it was not resolved would have told everyone i know not to use the yard, in my opinion even 1 lost customer hurts.

I once had an issue at the yard I go to where I didn't appreciate a comment made to me by one of the employees. I go there every week without fail and have always been respectful and had my metal properly separated. Since I didn't like the comment made to me I spoke directly to the owner and explained to him that the reason his employees have a job and the reason he makes money is because people like me go there and the next time anyone of his employees make a snide remark that it would be the last time I would ever pass by his scale. Since that time his employees have been extremely nice to me and welcoming me with open arms. At the end of the day customer is boss and we all know there are 2 rules: 1)the boss is always right and 2)if the boss is wrong see rule 1.

If the motors work, try selling them on eBay, scrapping it should b last resort. As far as the copper, I agree with bohemianlush, to many scrap yards to be bullied by a yard you frequently use.

After the scale guy weighs your pail, grab it then dump it into the number 2 bin, he'll be pissed for a week. Bright shiny heavy copper is Candy better than #1

Those are pretty sweet. I will pay you #1 and a half and pay for shipping to me. I think they have some better value on e-bay. How many you have and what weight? I will pay $4.50 a pound and the shipping. Just to take a shot in the dark that they are worth more.

Has anyone actually sold motors for their use as, I guess, motors? When I had my Michigan auction I sold dozens of motors and they were going for scrap value! Is there a market to sell them to end users out there someplace?

that plate should be #1 pipe if its solid. by me, #1 wire or BB gets a better price because the copper wire is a higher purity of copper for electrical conductivity. Pipes are not as pure because they dont want them to be TOO soft when they are supposed to last. Thats why theres a price difference between bare wire and clean pipe. But #2 for that piece makes no sense at all. but then again, its your choice to sell, and enything questionable, i always get it graded before it even touches the scale

I don't think that the Op will get #1 price for it as its not 100% copper.
#1 price is for bright clean copper wire that is expected to be high purity copper for electrical conductivity.

Those dies are going to have a fair amount of something else in them to make the copper harder for 'die use'.

They are pretty though! I would def. e-bay them. Someone out there will pay good for them.
