scrapping remote controls - Page 2

Still working on the garbage can of remotes (I do these in my spare time) and found one that's 6"wide and 11" long. Bigest remote I've ever seen.

I have come across some nice tv remotes, really good board inside. If the remote has some weight to it chances are it's good, although a few "cheapies" have turned out nice.

finished braking down all those remotes that I had. All low grade boards, about 10 IC chips and a lot of plastic.

The remote controls I have disassembled yielded anywhere between five to ten screws, nearly always a low grade board, between two and four batteries, the rubbery sheet with the buttons, et cetera. You will not find anything really worth scrapping, although I do take them apart when things slow down. I like to keep the screws and batteries and toss them in their respective bins - you can never have too many spare parts running around your shop.

I forgot, theres a gold wire in the IR LED....

I've found that you can make more money reselling functioning tv remotes than you can scrapping them specially the remotes from higher quality televisions. some do have gold contact and some will have gold bonding around a single IC but most dont. Recently stumbled upon a hoard of several thousand remotes that I picked up from a former cable employee. I was reluctant to go get them at first but then he showed me a sample of the remotes he scrapped himself and next thing you know it I'm the new owner of the remote control hoard.

agree with above. I have a high end Denon receiver I bought that is pretty much useless without the remote. the remotes for them sell online for double what I paid for the receiver!!

I have a guy who buys them from me by the ream-paper box. All of them, even the crappy ones with battery crud, inside. He says it's like a treasure hunt.

Just picked up about 1500 remotes....yeesh. Looks like I've got some work to do

Every one of the hundred or so I did in less than an hour had an IC chip but for two. A few were hidden under plastic so just tossed those into the low grade bucket. The really it only takes maybe 15 seconds to scrap one, 30 if it has screws. Another five or ten seconds down the road when I take all the IC chips out. Not worth much, true, but also takes very little time.

Some remotes operate TV's that they were not intended to operate.

Years ago I had paid NZ$100 for a egg shaped remote for my Sony 29inch CRT (State of the art @ the time...)
Later I found that a Sony remote for a different TV worked on it as well, it also brought up a whole bunch of different options on the screen inc serial # & country options.

You can do a similar thing with the programmable remotes if you try other codes in it.

I know a guy that saves up his remotes and sells them in a lot of 50 on eBay. I have sold satellite TV remotes on eBay as well. 6 bucks a piece.
