not sure here, got some propane bottles though i need to find out about too
I've considered crushing them...
Put them on craigslist. I get $5 a piece for my gas cans, and $20 a piece if they are boat tanks. I move them as fast as I find them. You would be surprised at the people that will spend that kinda money on something full of rust.
cut them in half mine takes them.
Personally I would sell them on craigslist or Ebay. The new plastic cans and metal cans don't have a vent to release pressure in order for the gas to flow better like the older cans do. The new cans just suck. (EPA rules).
I'm just picturing an action movie where the hero shoots the propane tank (or gas tank) blows it up annihilating the bad guys and saving the day. Unfortunately they disproved that old movie staple on an episode of Mythbusters!
Burly, are you still in Sarasota? If so Trade Mark Recycling (TMR) will take them if they are cut in half or a big hole cut in them.
No back in Detroit and missing my girl...
She knows, Mechanic, she knows...
Flaten them and they are ok by me. I save any plastic ones that i find and pour my old gas/oil or what I find in mowers, chainsaws etc., Then once a month you can dispose of household hazzardous waste at a drop off location by me. Stuff will still start a fire if need so I have a left over can just incase!
My yard will not take any gas cans, propane tanks, etc. Another yard will take tanks but you have to cut a 2 foot square hole in it. Not sure on gas cans at that yard.
If you guys run into old gas cans like the military style they can sell for alot of money online. I like buying military surplus and gas cans are around 40 dollars. Here is some from one of my favorite site to buy military stuff. Admin if this isn't allowed please delete the url.
ZBQ-1412 - Fuel Can Five Gallon NATO Brand New Unissued 18x13x6.5" Green with Lever Lock Lid
If you ever travel to Iowa I would buy them.
Scrap yards here take them,(as well as propane tanks) just have to punch a hole in them.
Mine do. From what I've seen, you just have to have the brass top off of propane tanks to be taken. (I've never gotten ahold of one, cuz the people around here do the Blue Rhino propane where they exchange an empty for a new) I think gas cans can be taken as shred. I toss aerosol cans in with my shred sometimes also. The yards down here use old oil tanks as containers to hold stuff and to weigh your stuff. Good re-use concept if you ask me.
