    Probably a silly question

    But I've never let that stop me before...

    When breaking down CRT TVs and monitors, is the copper that comes off the yoke considered #2? Reason I ask is that those four pieces don't really unwind. Also, how important is it to remove all the tape and/or melted plastic goop that seems to be on all of them? And if it is important, what's the best way to go about it? Water doesn't work, acetone doesn't work and grinding it off seems a bit extreme.

    I did try searching and found a lot of variations of "it's copper" and "don't break the glass" and "where can I get rid of the glass"

    Thanks everyone for putting up with my questions.
    Roy

    I put the yoke in a large metal dishpan and smack it around with the side of a 3# hammer. Most of the stuff crumbles away, then I will peel leftover tape and goob off trying to get most of it off. Should take a couple of minutes at most and then into the #2 bucket it goes. Dump out junk and repeat.

    your not doing that in the $800 cast iron pan are you? Sorry couldnt resist. I do the same thing as KZ. I did however take some in on my last run without the goop and tape removed and they just threw it in my #2 bucket. So you may want to call your yard and ask them if there will be a difference in price if the goop and tape is cleaned off or not. Might save you a heap of time.

    Yes, #2 copper. I just hit that melted stuff with a hammer. Then kind of twist it. That'll get most of it. I pull some of the tape but don't really worry about it much. I've never tried unwinding them. Right now, I'm in the middle of breaking down 70 monitors. I hope you don't mind me asking a related question but has anyone found a market for the yokes? And what are they made of?

    Are you talking about the black metal thing the copper is wound around? It's ferrite. I throw it in with my tin/shred.

    Although they are easy to break down, they can also be placed in with electric motors. Silly thought, I know, but it is an option.

    Mick, this is a yoke. Which part are you referring to?

    The black pieces over the top two sections of copper. They seem like thick glass (ceramic?). I don't think the yard will take the couple hundred or so I have.

    Don't feel bad Mick, I think we all have those duh...Aha moments, at least I do. Chances are if copper wire is wrapped around something hard it will be some form of metal or ferrite.

    This is a rod choke; These are inductors; This is a choke and all these have ferrite centers; ;

    Just for the heck of it the other day I compared what a "Doughnut" shaped choke wrapped with non-insulated copper wire would pay as motor or turned in as wire. Came out to $.06 and $.25 using .30 and 3.00 as my prices.

    KZBell, so as an electric motor or CBM price at $0.25/lb. the choke is worth $0.06 and if you break the down the same coke and sell the copper as #2 at $3.00/lb it is worth $0.30?

    If your numbers are correct I see they need to be held and processed by me when I devise a process. I would think a tumbler would work. Mike.

    I tried that with a cement mixer using big heavy chunks of steel. It sort of works, but dont put in coils that would have had a long wire if unwound. They end up tying themselves in the most horrible tangled ball of crap. Took me hours to cut it all apart to get the metal chunks out of it.
