To remove or not to remove...that is the question.

So I have this board that has some decent old IC chips on it and a number of surface mounted capacitors (probably mid grade) However it also has a ton of capacitors. I don't have a buyer in mind as I am saving up scrap slowly or else I would send the picture to them and ask. Do you all think it would be best to:

1: Leave the board as is.

2: Remove the many capacitors from the board.

3: Remove the components worth anything from the board amd shred the rest.

If you are slowly accruing e waste as you say you are, I'd see no reason to break it down other than as a hobby. You will not yield anything significant by removing the valuable components and you'll downgrade the board. You may however be able to upgrade it to a peripheral board by removing those al caps, don't take much time. Up to you but removing the valuable components is rarely worth it except for removable IC chips

I'd knock the larger can caps off and sell it as a midgrade.

Thanks for the info! The aluminum caps are going away, the large ones at least. Do you guys also remove large resistors or do those generaly not cause problems for buyers?

I've not heard of a problem from any of the buyers I use.

On a board like that, I would leave it all on and get mid grade for it. That's only my opinion.

The dilemma continues. We have board buyers and component buyers. Two confusing prospects. H mm what do do on limited fragmented information. What's the real skinny ?

I'll work under the assumption that the other side is green. The ICs are not that large. I only take ICs off of brown boards since their value is significantly higher per pound than the shred price. There is a time/cost factor involved in removing these. The value of midgrade boards is due in part to the ICs. The higher value of midgrade compensates for the time cost required to remove them.

Concerning the caps - I would leave them on. "Midgrade" contains a wide range of quality. A large lot of midgrade with a few having some caps would be averaged out by higher quality midgrades. Doesn't seem like an issue if you also include higher quality in the lot.

Personally, I would remove the AL heat sink and the copper transistors. I have local buyers for those, but not midgrades. I can get immediate pay for the AL and CU, and midgrades get stored for later shipment. I can store more effectively without the the bulky heat sinks.

Well part of the problem is buyers have a different pay scale for that "mid grade" I've been paid anywhere from $.40/lb to $1.70/lb for that same kind of board. so now i sell to different buyers to maximize my $$

You do seem lost black... the top right board "telecom" has TA caps( yellow round things)which you could remove to get about $15/lb good luck with that i pulled those off for 10 months and got 11lbs, your board wont be downgraded though. then you got some mid grade boards(low) and a really nice telecom board upper right side that would fetch about $5/lb (or more)to the right buyer

Thanks i have more boards if you like to see. Thats the type info i needed to make better decisions and feel ok about them.
