Want to really scratch your head. Take a p4 pinned cpu and pop the heatspreader off and look on the reverse side of the spreader.

    Another fun tip..

Don't just throw out brown boards assuming they suck. Some will surprise you an have some gold on them, or something else. A good example is some house phone boards. They will be brown but will have the gold for the buttons. Not overly common but you will see them at some point, same with a few other types. I look over all my brown boards, an green.

One thing i've learned with ewaste is..anything is possible. When you hear constantly there is no gold in a tv, then pull out a DPL/DLP(Arrgh!) chip a couple times, you start changing your tune on thinking everything will be the same.

Next time I get some what I call.."fancy" brown boards in I'll try an snap some pics.

Short an simple..Don't assume everything is the same.

Use my protip or not, but you'll be surprised with some of the things you find an what you find them on or in.

Good luck buddy, an you know how to reach me if I ever can be of help.

Sirscrapalot - I had a quote, but it wasn't good enough for Sledge's thread.

Strip them if need be of the goodies. It's a weird thing that happens now an then.

if I have a lot of them, which I usually don't I'll save them an then do the popular.."Ask your buyer".

It's like floppy boards. if you just assume cause it's brown, it'll suck. You'll throw away the gold connector. It's little things. For some folks who are a big operation, looking over such boards probably isn't as worthwhile. For me, as a one man show the majority of the time, I can do so. I do it in my down time or while sorting out boards.

I'm sure we all have tales of surprises we've found in items we've opened. I know a lot of **** satellite box or cable box, or modem/router I open their all usually bloody different. lol.

Not everyone has to do things as I do them of course. I was just offering a tip to someone new to ewaste. Very easy to just say.."all brown sucks" "Anything not from a computer or high end..sucks" when the reality can be far different. I've found a lot of surprises in this line of work. Good an bad mind you.

Anyhoo, just my thoughts. As always, YMMV.

I agree Sir, I don't cash in brown boards till I've been over them at least 3 times. I save any board that has buttons for later inspection. Magnafication is the key. Especially for those ever elusive tants. Haven't found many but have found them on the third time going over them.

Maybe I should go over them once more....

    Another good example...

Video Game Controller Boards. Not sure on the current generation...Xbox one, ps4, etc.

Older ones like N64, Off brand controllers for Xbox, an PS2...contain what appears to be a green board, til you flip it. One side brown, other green, nothing fancy straight off. Till you look closer peel back the rubber grommet type thingies, an see..gold on that brown board/green board. Usually in the shape of teh controller pad, side buttons, an the other buttons.

If you want pictures join the scrap room, I think I posted some there long ago. Unless someone else has posted some since then.

    Just another example of..not assuming.

An Junk I hear ya. I try to look close the first time but I always end up doing a 2nd or 3rd pass, sometimes even a 4th. Usually have to remember what I saw! Lol.

I always enjoyed breaking down video game stuff, cept Xboxs, they piss me off with all the **** security screws. We now have a buyer for such things, so..one less issue for me!

    YMMV

Not sure if you have seen that sartorious breakdown I did awhile back . The boards in those varied greatly from green on green . Fainter green on green to brown on green . They all had the same basic components . And all had gold pins on them . I guess the technology advanced while they were being produced and they found a cheaper way to assemble the boards . Just another thing to consider if your breaking down 40-50 whatever . Don't ever assume they will all have the same innards . I can breakdown a Xbox controller if you want and post some pics . I might have some of the boards I was talking about around here somewhere .

On a side note be carefull of black ice on asphalt and wooden staircases . I almost bought the farm coming in from the grocery store .

I indeed saw your breakdown on the xbox, matter of fact i even thanked it.

Love playing the things, hate breaking them down though.

Controller I opened a couple weeks back had the usual..3 boards. 2 little ones wired to the main one. For the video game fans, the two little ones would be the button on the back of teh controller. Main board is everything with the joystick, d-pad, an buttons. One side green, hardly anything, other brown, with the gold parts for the contacts.

I tried to get a photo up but I need to replace this phone. It really dislikes working these days. Hence the lack of pics.

Anyhow..Sledge, others...sell your stuff to our game guru, or break them down for some goodies. Worse case you end up with a low grade an some wire. An it takes about 5 seconds to bust open that plastic housing if your into much of a rush to unscrew it. lol.

Sledge, I've never seen one like that before. Interesting though.

I found 2 gold pinned ceramic cpu's on a telecom board today. They are 1"X1".
