Why do they have a Gold plated base? I don't think that it would help much with heatsinking the transistor.
I have noticed this on SAW (standing acoustic wave) devices too, and theres no reason at all to heatsink them.
Theres normally at least one in every CRT, but more modern ones are black resin encased.
Very pretty things to look at if you can get inside the casing.
And..... That LCD screen in pjost's post. They normally have full Gold plating on the board.
I find them in lots of different appliances, microwaves, telephones, alarm clocks, photocopiers etc.
