You're right, the value isn't there, certainly isn't there if they were refined.
Like with Pentium Pros, I think people purchase
e-waste as a way of hoarding gold because it's difficult to counterfeit. It's relatively easy to drill out a gold bar, put lead in the middle and melt it back in such a way that it wouldn't be suspect, but it's far more difficult to fake a computer chip or stick of ram.
I have no idea what people were thinking bidding on this auction, but I think it's pretty obvious that someone is loosing out.
