I never recommend a 24 hour auction. Everything I do now is BIN, but I used to sell via auctions.
For quick auctions (Either one day or three day), you'll want desirable components. This means working items that everyone needs. Computer RAM is a good example here. If you have a name brand of RAM, and it's a currently used part (Crucial DDR3, for example), there will be enough people looking that a 3 day auction will do very well. A 1 day auction can work out for these items sometimes, but I just don't like to take the risk on it. For the above example, you'd probably be fine.
For scrap lots, a longer auction is better.
For uncommon items that aren't in high demand, a BIN is the way to go. It will take longer to find "the right buyer", so you don't want a fixed ending time.

24-hr auctions are looked down apon depending on where you're holding it. Ebay expresses on their site not to do them as they tend to come off as scammish. I don't do them personally because 24-hrs isn't enough time to grab everyone's attention.
I normally 10 day auctions due to the material I normally sell. The only reason for me to think about a 3day or less auction is I want to move something quickly and and its the only way to get my item on the first page now. Mike

I did away with auctions didn't have much luck with them seems like i make more money with BIN with obo option but I also sell lawnmower and appliance parts well and what ever else sells on ebay that I get. When I did auctions i never got a lot of views but I agree if you know you got a hot item do a auction.

24 hour auctions almost never sell...or sell well UNLESS a REALLY popular item (say an iphone). Even then, why shoot yourself in the foot? Give it 3 days to get a little speed and for more people to see it (ie you WILL get higher pricing). I do that with my broken smartphones and they sell about 90% of the time (granted I price correctly based on last 30 days of sales).

I have went back to auctions for the random junk I get that I know it will sell and I know I will make more than scrap value since scrap is VERY LOW. But if its a small engine part or appliance part that I know works I still do BIN with the option OBO. But with the auctions I'm to start doing a 10 day auction to see if my profit will go up.
One of the negatives I have noted on auctions has been non payment. Of course with the BIN requires immediate payment so no chance for a non payment.
I rarely use the Best Offer option on my listings because I feel it cheapens the item. My thought is it complicates the decision for a potential customer who wants to purchase right now. I believe they may think if they use the BIN rather than the Best Offer they are paying too much. We only have a moment to attract the customer to our listing and close the deal with out being there to speak with our customer.
