I know its possible to recover gold from an old cell phone..but is it possible to recover the silver and platinum as well?..according to my research all gold extraction methods destroy the platinum and gold..Ive been researching this for quite some time and I have not found a method that works..anyone have an Idea?..Again sorry for the multiple posts..just not sure where this fits in.

Check the gold refining forum. Fair warning, they are much less forgiving on these types of questions than we are

Thanks..Like I said ive been researching but cant find any way to do it "in the back yard"
I would seriously reconsider the backyard refining. The chemistry and process could create a serious haz mat situation. Left over liquid not something you just spill on the ground or dump down a drain. Looked at it myself a few months back. Decided no way not for me. Will sell boards etc to a house here.

I have a friend with a gold refining system..safety gear and such..the only problem is that it destroys the other metals....and lets face it..if i die in some kind of gold recovery scheme i didnt need to reproduce in the first place..if it works I get gold..if it doesnt the gene pool is strengthened..its a win win for the world as a whole

Short answer, no! You do not lose those precious metals. You end up dropping them out of solution one at a time.
Find the gold refining forum if you want to participate. Do not post questions like that there until you have spent at least 50 hours reading through old posts.

It has been determined that the "backyard do-it-yourselfers" lose about 30-50% do to the refining methods used. Not to mention if a neighbor calls law enforcement and then they call someone from the EPA. Wow, too much at risk there.Originally Posted by meh

Safety gear??.. u need a helluva lot more than safety gear to process boards n such for refining..chemicals, waste treatment, etc..what kinda quantity do you even have??.. not trying to be a dink,but i do know to consider refining you need more than a couple mobos..id suggest selling to a buyer here

Ok ive been reading on the gold refining forum..sooooo much to learn...thanks for the info guys..as far as volume I have something in the neighborhood of 50 boards..starting to rethink the whole back yard reclamation idea..even if it would strengthen the gene pool

Refining gold and other precious metals is really one of the biggest areas where you have to "go big or go home". You need tons of raw supplies (motherboards, cell phone boards, what have you). You then need a lot of hazardous chemicals and safety gear - none of which comes cheap. In most places, you will need to go through significant red tape to be properly licensed and have the right permits.
Remember, meth labs blow up all the time - and they're dealing with less dangerous chemicals. Of course, they generally start out with fewer brain cells anyway, making them more prone to an accident - but still.

There was a guy from NJ, a retired chemistry teacher or something. He put in about $8K of equipment and I forgot how many hours. When all was said and done, he said the result was a ball of gold the size of a BB pellet and a lot of haz mat issues to dispose of. He shared this experience of his to let others know that unless you are dealing with huge volume (thousands of pounds), it is just not worth it.
I forget his webpage, but I am sure I am not the only one who has looked into it and read his findings.

Best advice was given by another forum member seek out the gold refining forum, but first read one of two book the first one is a free download from several internet sites while the second one maybe purchased at reasonable cost.
I'm the one who originally scanned this book and made it publicly available to members on the gold refining forum. There have been well over two million downloads, the book has since been revised as a screen readable and another version easily printed into book form complete with instructions on how to bind the book Hokes Refining Precious Metals Wastes.
Ammens book Refining Precious Metals is still covered by Copyright, there is a digital version of the first edition but it's unlikely you’re going to find a copy. I myself have the second edition and much prefer it over the Hokes publication.
Read either one of these publications you'll be safe to ask your questions on the gold forum without having your character shredded or your feelings hurt.

Hey Alloy, that was a post made over three years ago and the member hasn't been on this forum since 09-18-2012, so I doubt you will reach him. But it's still excellent advice nonetheless.
