escrap questions

I have a few questions.

First set, will be regarding a computer I tore down the day before yesterday. This has been the oldest one so far I have tore down.

1.

I got this hard drive out of it. For the life of me, i cannot tell what size it is...normally it I find 80gb or so, but this one doesnt seem to have it, or perhaps they wrote it differently on this one?

2.

I see a these on everything. However, are they meant to come off, and if so, what are they even worth? If they do come off, HOW? lol

3.

I pulled this out, and I am guessing it is the CPU "CHIP" as there was none on this motherboard. I hear people talk about P2, etc but after doing a search on ebay, these dont really sell for nothing. Yet, I see people talk about them sometimes. So are they in fact worth something? Even as scrap, what would they be?


Now for a separate question.

i never see people talking about breaking things off motherboards except for the batteries that are sometimes on them of course.

However, I think I saw a post buy ewaste, or one of the other ewaste buyers recently, stating to remove all excess metal and plastic from the motherboards. So, my question is, besides the batteries, what else do you guys generally take off the motherboards if ANYTHING?

2. In order to get those they must be soldered from the board. Check with you buyer first as it might downgrade the board.
3. Thats a old slot processor. Take a screw driver and pry that plastic off.


Newer P4 boards had a metal bracket holding the processor in place, this must be removed when found. Behind all the plugins on most p4 boards is a massive heat sink that must be removed. North bridge heat sink over the built in graphics chip must be removed. Button batteries removed as well.

Most of the old boards had just 1 or 2 of these pieces to remove. Its all the new ones that change the regulation.

My buyer has never given me a hard time about leaving too much of anything on. My understanding of taking off excess plastic and metal would be the stuff that houses the heat sink and CPU. I think if it can removed easily with a couple screws, remove it. As far as the smallerheat sinks and such, I leave it all on. The more weight the better for me.

actually looking back, i think it says 2.1AT there, might be worth a quick check on ebay for sold listings, just do a search within ebay search box for quantum fireball (+model number), then when you get the list of results, on the left side you should find (they keep moving it around, and even hiding it, but it should be there somewhere) "completed listings only", then when you get to completed listings check out the ones in green (they're the ones that sold)

Thanks for your reply. I figured 2 wasn't anything to worry over, but better safe than sorry.

Also with 3, I will take the plastic off when I get home. As far as the rest of it goes, does it go with the normal PC Chip Processors, or is it classified as something else?

I do remove the heat sinks, fan motors, and other really big stuff. The other stuff, I just leave it alone.

Yeah that is exactly what i been doing but wanted to assure myself I was doing it right. Rather get most for the buck, instead of screwing my ownself over lol.

That drive is probably a 4.3, 6.5, 8.4 gb range, being from the p2 era. google quantum and the model number, the first few results you should see the size without even opening a link there

Slot processors get around $10 per pound. Save them up. When a hard drive does not state easily what the value is, it is waaay low and probably less than 20 gig. May even be less than 1 gig. I have had some of those in some old machines.

George, slot processors are listed as slot processors. go to the buyers section and look at ewasted thread, he has a list of what he buys and these processors are listed thier.

Usually down towards the bottom of the CPU section.

thanks guys for the information. I did the search on ebay for the hard drive. doesnt seem like they really sell so must likely will be breaking it down.

also $10 a lb for slot processors isn't real bad.

If you want to know the size of old drives that do now have a marking on the that say the size. You will need this formula and some info from the cover.

First get the info from the drive
Heads
Cylinders
Sectors

Then apply these formulas.

Heads x Cylinders x Sectors x 512 = Total drive byte size

Total drive byte size / 1024 = Total drive Kilobyte size

Total drive Kilo byte size / 1024 = Total drive Megabyte size

Total drive Megabyte size / 1024 = Total drive Gigabyte size

That will give you the ( Actual disk size ) If you want to know exactly how big windows will see it. Replace the 1024 with a 1000. As windows uses a base 2 system for size calculations but manufactures use a base 10.

To find the full GB size of a drive the forumla would look like this.

Heads x Cylinders x Sectors x 512 = ((( Total drive byte size / 1024 ) / 1024 ) / 1024 ) = GB Size

thanks to drozenski's method, I found out it is a little under 2gb so scrap it is.

Ok, I am pretty sure this is a copper top heatsink. However, the question that I have, is how to you remove the copper? I have tried, and it is not budging to well.

Isn't the whole thing copper? I turned one in today in the #2 bucket.
