I found this in a Tower I almost fainted when I first looked at it, but I also was thinking it couldn't be, Is this real gold or Not? This is a AMD Athlon Processor it was Made 1999.

This was my first load of E Scrap so I have no idea.
You have found what is an anodized Al heat sink. Take it off and heft it on your hand and I believe you will find I am correct. Sorry its not gold plate either. Keep looking you will find a gold plated cpu one day. Mike.

It is an aluminum heat sink. they come in ask different colors. inside the plastic is a slot processor.

That is anodized Aluminum. Gold is used in computers because it does not tarnish/corrode. You will mainly see it used in connectors and on circuit boards where the connectors plug in.

Most but not all heat sinks are extruded aluminum but some yards will not pay you for that. They'll pay for cast or old sheet which is less money.Originally Posted by Kochy
There is a couple of categories of alum.- cast - old sheet - extruded. And some yards call them different things, you'll just have to get used to how your yard works and what they call them.

Thanks for the answers guys, Appreciated. BTW, I am soon gunna post up my recent two loads of scrap to the yard, because the last one was a ton and a half and this next one is big as well so watch out for a post from me.

I've got a yard that pays "plate aluminum" for these heat sinks, which is 5 cents higher than extruded right now. Surprised me so much, I even asked "Are you sure?" and they said yep - the bottom part is thicker than 1/4" so we pay plate, even with the thinner fins. At that point, I was like, ok, thank you very much.

Dont be so sure that is aluminum. Take a file to it. I see a lot of those same heat sinks that are pure copper...weighing around a pound.

Do any of you get grief from a yard if your heat sinks are annodized or a different color than normal aluminum?

That is extruded aluminum and no it makes no diffrance if it annodized. Bpatnoe is the only one to mention the slot processor that the heat sink is attached to.

i had a few circular heatsinks that were copper with an alum core......brake rotor, socket, bfh, thoughts of x-gf lol

I got some Apple G5 CPU's a while back.
I think they were over a Lb each & because they are a mix of Copper & Ali I got NZ$3 a Kg for the metal (US$2.40 each?)
The site that hosts the second pic is a used computer parts place. They say it weighs 3 & 1/2 Lb, probably closer than my guess.

The bottom plate, that I thought was plated Copper, is actually a really really heavy Ali alloy. I cut it with a metal lopper & the Ali was hard, but soft. ie, It smeared, but didn't break or crack as I cut it.
And the boards covered in SMD capactors.....
