    Hard Drive Tester

I have been looking high and low on this forum for a little device that tests 2.5 and 3.5 inch SATA hard drives. I saw it here about 2 weeks ago but now I can't find it. Can anyone point it out again and throw a link at me.

Here you go HammerTime: Amazon.com: StarTech.com eSATA USB to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for Dual 2.5 or 3.5in HDD: Electronics

If you want to look at other brands/models, just Google "hard drive dock" (or type it in Amazon).

I'm wiping hard drives right now as I type, lol.

    BigRyan,
Yep! Thats it! Ive been looking for this thing now for 2 weeks. Now if they made that same dock that would also wipe the HDD's (without breaking the bank) that would be great.

Yeah it would be nice if there were a cheap, external "wiper". But honestly, it's still easy if you have a dock and a free program called "Eraser" - you can wipe hdd's all day long to DoD standards, then resell on eBay for nice $$$

I wrote a long post on it in the Scrap Room. My $40 dock has made me back 20 times that this year!

I am probably just to tired to think straight, but isnt HDD's and HD's the same?

Also, I agree, "Eraser" and "Hard Drive Eraser" both are very good!

Have a question with Eraser. I've adjusted the settings to DoD standards, etc., but I'm finding it still doesnt wipe the drive. When i go back i'm still finding tons of things on there. I thought maybe some were "protected" or encrypted, but i was able to open them up no problem (stuff like photos, etc). I've looked back through the Eraser help but must be missing something. Anyone have a suggestion of how I can effectively wipe the drive to the point where i feel comfortable selling it? Hopefully it is an easy fix like a setting i'm missing....

There should be no way of this to happen after 7 successful wipes. I would suspect that either the tester is faulty or the hard drive is some how partitioned and you are only wiping part of the drive.

Thanks for the help. Another question, and i dont mean to sound lazy by not reading the Eraser help, but i'm not a tech guy and its a bit confusing. Should the drive properties show 0 used space? Does it wipe out everything including the OS? Or should that be the only thing left on there. If so, wouldnt a reformatting of the drive do the same thing? I've tested about 14 drives and it says in the notes that the wipe was done, but with errors. Mainly it says i cant access xyz files and it will show a list of different ones. Suggestions are greatly appreciated, and in the meantime i'm going to keep fiddling with it and try not to get ticked off

I would use the disk management feature of your computer to first delete all partitions, reformat it then run the eraser. This will get rid of all protected files the eraser program will not erase. Im sure its just a setting in the program. I dont use that one so im not sure.

I'm finally breaking down and getting a docking station so that i can wipe drives. Here's my dilema: I need to be able to wipe IDE and sata drives, both 2.5 and 3.5. I'm also seeing a couple different manufacturers selling such items (Thermaltake/BlacX and Startech). I have a large percentage of people that are handing me computers for free but only asking that I wipe the drives. With the quantity I'm getting, I need something that works fast, is capable and durable. Anyone have a good suggestion for a brand or a setup that has worked great for you?

Startech all the way. Now as far as fast you can forget that. 80gb will take an hour. 1tb drive took me 14 hours. If you want fast you need to buy one of the stand alone units that will cost you $2500 per bay. Or you can just send them to me and ill do all the work for you.

If only they weighed the same as bubble wrap i would send you a gaylord. But you got me hooked on selling them on ebay
Do you have all the devices to do the ide and sata, or just the one sata device that does 2.5 and 3.5?

I have the startech single dock that does both sata and IDE. Im about to buy the 4 port sata dock so I can do 4 drives at a time.

Nice...thats the one i saw listed for about $160? I was thinking the same as well. Are IDE drives selling well for you, or is your business mainly in the sata?

I was thinking of one of those docks. Then as I was parting out a computer I decided to hook the drive up directly inside the computer. The motherboard can handle 4 SATA drives and 3 IDE drives the 4th IDE is used for the CD drive.

I don't know for sure but was wondering is it faster than those USB docks.

Also what software do most use????? I have been using Dban
